Today we honor SP4 Daniel P. Schulze, presented the Bronze Star Medal with V
device for Valor, and a Purple Heart for injuries sustained as inflicted by the enemy,
he was a true American hero. Drafted a year after High School, Dan served with the
Americal Division, Co E Recon 4/21 Infantry 11C Mortar Platoon in 1968-1969.
His life was shortened by the horrific events he endured while serving his country
proudly. But instead of sharing how he passed, it is much more fitting to reflect on
how he lived!
This is a man that once in South Vietnam, serving in I Corps, in the northern regions,
just South East of DaNang, from LZ Baldy he normally carried 8-10 grenades, that
he could throw for 60 yards with uncanny accuracy to inflict damage upon the
enemy. Additionally he carried 5lbs of C4, 600 rounds of ammo and his pack that he
carried daily would weigh in excess of 85 lbs.
During one incident, Dan, Sgt Kelsey, and his CO 1Lt Ace Clark were on patrol and
came under hostile fire. They happened to come upon an underground bunker with
several VC in residence. They threw a grenade in, and as it exploded screams and
moans were heard from within. Shortly thereafter, a grenade was tossed from inside
and exploded in their midst before them. The 1Lt and his Sgt were both
incapacitated and rendered unconscious, and Dan lay upon the ground severely
wounded, bleeding profusely with a stomach wound he was still capable to render
assistance to Sgt Kelsey.
Able to grasp his .45 cal handgun, he covered the bunker as the VC began exiting
and terminated the threat with several kills, saving the lives of his squad that day.
Shortly thereafter soldiers came to their aid and immediately medevaced him and
his fellow grunts to medical treatment.
In the words of his Commanding Officer, 1Lt Ace Clark, ..Dan was one of the
toughest, most high-spirited, and most dependable in our all-volunteer platoon of 25
grunts. He put his life on the line every day for Smitty, and Jack, and Kelsey, and
Neil, and Pops, and me. In the great hall of heroes, Dan is for real.

On behalf of a grateful nation, and community, I am proud to have known you Dan,
may you enjoy your eternal peace, as the saints above have greeted you with a
harmonious Welcome Home, and our Lord knows youve earned it my friend!
