Civil War: A war between two groups of people
in the same
country.
Republic: A country not ruled by a King or
Queen.
Lord Protector: Oliver Cromwells title as
ruler of England.
Puritan: A strict Protestant who wanted to
worship God very simply.

ENGLAND UNDER CROMWELL


o After the execution of Charles I for sending his
country into Civil War, the country turned into a
Republic.
o Nobody really knew what to do without a King or
a Queen, so they looked towards the most
powerful man in the country for guidance. This
man was Oliver Cromwell, leader of the army.
o Cromwell was a Puritan, who believed in
encouraging people to live a simple life. He
changed how the people in England lived. Rules
were strict and punishment was harsh!!

Cromwell! Can you think of any adjectives to describe
Puritan England?

Imagine that you have just arrived
in England in 1657 on your first
visit for ten years. Write a letter/
postcard to a friend, describing
what Puritan England is like and
what you think of it.

PLENARY
I will write a key word about Cromwells
England on a Post-it note! I will ask one
pupil to come up to the front of the
class. The rest of the class has to get
the person at the front to say the exact
word!! You can only use your historical
knowledge from todays lesson.
