Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 1. PROMOTING CHILD DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING
Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded in a child
development knowledge base. They use their understanding of young childrens
characteristics and needs, of multiple interacting influences on childrens development,
and create environments that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for
each child. (NAEYC, 2010)

Brief Description of Evidence:


During the spring semester of 2013 during my ECED 120-Child Growth and
Development course, I evaluated and studied the theories of Erick Erikson. In the Erick
Erikson Self Study Assignment, I was able to look at myself and relate them to Eriksons
theory on the eight stages of development. I was able to relate myself to the stages, and
compare and contrast experiences.

Analysis of What I Learned:


Through completion of this assignment, I am able understand the different stages
of development children experience as they age. I now know the importance that the
environment and settings can be in the development of young children. Through this
artifact I have learned how categorize the stages of development that a child may be in
at the time. I can use this assignment as reference tool and refer back to Eriksons
studies when conducting and completing assessments. This assignment also taught me
how positive interaction and atmosphere have a vital role in the development of young
children, and how they perceive themselves.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC


Standard:
This project is just one example of the knowledge that I have in child growth and
development. I understand that each child has different needs and are at different stages
in their development. I am able to provide a positive, healthy, respectful, and supportive
environment for children to learn and discover their selves and their surroundings. I am
able to use multiple interacting influences such as assessment tools and individual
tracking to focus on each child and his/her specific needs. I am able to create and
promote a learning environment that is rich in learning through play which supports early
child growth and development.
