Introduction:

I am placed in an Autistic classroom at Mercer High School. In the class there are two
assistants, one one-on-one aide, and one special education teacher. The staff in the classroom are
very nice, welcoming, and helpful. Mrs. Barrie, the special education teacher, is especially
helpful in explaining everything she does and her reasoning behind it which is nice for me to
learn everything I can. There are seven students in the class, five boys and two girls. The ages
of the students in the class vary from eighteen years to twenty one years of age and the students
are at a second or fourth grade academic level with one student being on a kindergarten level.
All of the students are nice, respectful, and eager to learn. One of the students uses assistive
technology as her means of communication. Most of the students leave the class at some point
for speech, physical, or occupational therapy and for three periods throughout the day a speech
therapist is in the classroom working with particular students during the lesson. The day is
broken down into eight periods, including lunch, where lessons are taught in group settings, the
only exception is some English lessons where the class then breaks down into two smaller
groups of three students and four students.

News-2-You Beatle Mania article
Teaching aid worksheet
Assessment worksheet

Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify the meaning of vocabulary words: band, fans, and
perform through verbally saying the definition and writing it out.
2. Students will be able to match pictures to correct vocabulary word and definition.
3. Students will be able to construct a sentence using at least one of their vocabulary words
or they will be able to correctly fill in the blank with an appropriate word.
4. Students will be able to ask for needed supplies for the lesson.

Activity/ Procedure:
1. First I will review the article with the students by discussing key points of the article
through wh? (who, what, where, when, why) question and answers responses from
each student.
a. What is the article about?
b. Who were the Beatles?
c. Why did the Beatles come to America?
d. Who welcomed the Beatles in America?
2. Next, using the teaching aide worksheet as a guide, I will ask the students what each
vocab word means and write each on the board for them to later copy down. The students
will be given examples of each word used in a sentence.
3. After going over the vocabulary words and definitions the students will be given a
worksheet where they will have to write each of the definitions out on next to each of the
words.
4. They will then have to cut and paste a picture to the appropriate box next to each word.
For this step the students will have to use their social skills to ask for scissors and glue.
5. Finally, the students will have to write a sentence using at least one of the vocabulary
words based off of a picture provided or fill in a blank with an appropriate word. On
Assessment:
1. The students will be assessed on the level of prompts needed to answer questions, and
define vocab words.
2. They will also be assessed how much assistance is needed to ask for the needed supplies
of the lesson, and how much assistance they need for completing the worksheet.
3. As a whole the students will be assessed by their ability to define bands, fans, and
perform by the end of the lesson.

Outcomes:
1. I was presently surprised at how well the students paid attention during my lesson.
Although there were a few hiccups with listening overall everyone paid attention.
2. The students did extremely well defining the vocab words! I was shocked that some of
them realized the definitions were on the teaching aide worksheet and that they knew to
copy it from there. They also did a fabulous job matching the pictures to the right
vocabulary word. From what I could tell the students did not need much prompting from
assistance in the room to tell them were each picture went, which is GREAT!
3. The students also did an amazing job with their social skills when it came time to cutting
and pasting the pictures next to the vocab word. I was concerned that they would need a
prompt to ask from scissors or glue, but I was proven wrong when more than half of the
students independently got my attention and asked for the needed supplies. Only two of
the students needed to be reminded as to what they were doing and then they realized on
their own that they needed to get my attention and ask for the supplies needed.

4. I feel as though the students really understood the lesson and by the end of the lesson
knew the meanings of the three vocabulary words. I feel this way because at the end of
the lesson I went around to each student independently and ask what each picture was of
and the meaning of the word and all of the students were able to answer my questions
with few to no verbal or gestural prompts.
Reflection:
I have to admit I was extremely nervous in teaching this lesson to the students. This was
my first time ever teaching an actual lesson and I was scared out of my mind. I was nervous
that the students would not pay attention and if this were the case I would not know how to
gain their attention in order to have a successful lesson. Not even two minutes into the lesson
the students proved me wrong with almost perfect listening and being respectful. Once I got
the hang of the lesson and a better flow (in the beginning I thought I might have been moving
a little fast) it went pretty much perfectly. I was proud of myself for being able to gain the
students attention, adapt the lesson a little as I went along, and even control a situation when
one of the students started to get off task when I was talking with him. I have to give credit
to the students for being so good, if they werent as well behaved as they were I know my
lesson would have went completely wrong and I would not have known what to do.
