World Studies Hybrid 2/13 Due Tuesday, 2/17

1. From the World Studies Edline Website, navigate to Notes, Unit 2 Population &
Migration and review the powerpoint entitled Population Pyramids.
2. Read the blog post from the PRB about Population Pyramids and do the following:
a. Compare the Population Pyramid for Zambia and for Japan (clickable links
in the text). What are the different conclusions that can be drawn by looking
at total numbers vs. percentages?
Japans Population is much older than Zambias in general and is more even by age
group. This is the result of better health programs and a more stable economic
system. They are better able to support the elderly and have a much lower child
mortality rate. The population of Zambia needs all of these children in order to have
a healthy adult population because so many of them will die. Both are similar in
even splits of the sexes.
c. Create Pyramids for China, India, US, Germany and South Africa for both
the current year and for 2050. (Select Report: Population Pyramid Graph,
Select Year: 2014 & 2050, click Submit)

d. Draw 10 conclusions and comparisons between the countries that show

the differences in the structure of the population of these countries.
1. India has the biggest population growth due to its high number of people that
reach an age of fertility.
2. South Africa has the highest percentage of young people because a lot of new
developments have been made in health and medicine allowing more children to
survive.
3. South Africa has the lowest life expectancy shown by the drastic decrease in
population after age 30.
4. China, as a result of the one child policy, has a much smaller ratio of people
younger than age 20 than the other 4 countries.
5. As medicine technology increases so does the percentage of people that survive
to old age causing the pyramid to shift into a more rectangular shape.
6. As populations stabilize there are less workers per retiree which limits well fare
benefits.

7. With medicine increasing in India there will be a record amount of young people
reaching fertility rate which will lead to a population explosion.
8. Indias current generation must learn population control or they will outgrow their
production and have problems.
9. South Africas graph is more of triangular in shape due to the limited
development of their health care system.
10. Germany has the most stable population growth over the next 35 years and will
level off.
3. We watched the first segment of World in the Balance, a case study about Indias
population (0-23:00). Describe the population issues India must address regarding
high birth rates, status of women and poverty. What does their population pyramid
tell you about what needs to be done in the future to support their population
adequately?
Indian families have always had many kids. They need at least two sons to look
after the parents in old age. This has never been a big problem, because of high
infant and child mortality rates but now with the increase in development of health
care more of these children will survive to reproduce. If these kids arent taught
birth control methods and the importance of limiting the amount of children they
have they could end up with a population too big to support. Womens rights and
education rates must be raised so that they have a say in this issue and can help
the problem.
4. Follow the link to: Lesson Plan: 2014 World Population Data Sheet. Complete
Activity 1 (Questions 1-15), use the PRB Data Finder , charts and maps by topic,
International section to view country rankings for each indicator.
