Social Studies is a course that depends on participation. Unexcused absences are not
acceptable; a signed note with parents phone number would be appreciated. Please let me
know in advance if you are going to miss a test or class.
Dont be afraid to ask questions. Speak up in class, get involved.
Be organized. (Use your agenda to keep track of assignments and due dates. Keep your
notebook neat and organized. Write the date on handouts and notes so you can keep them
in order.)
Complete all assignments and homework on time! (Please dont procrastinate, stress
and anxiety will only make the assignment harder to complete.)
Review your notes regularly.
Pay attention to the news. If you dont already read a newspaper or online news page
you should probably start to do so.
Do your own work. Copying from friends or having tutors writing your assignments does
not help you learn the material and will create downward pressure on your grade.
Read! Reading is an essential skill for Social Studies and most of your other classes.
Recognize that learning is your responsibility. For the time being it is your job. No one
can make you learn if you dont want to.

Treat people with respect.

a. If someone else is talking, listen.
b. Recognize that people are entitled to their opinions even if you disagree with them.
c. People (including you) will make mistakes. Do not be afraid to be wrong or to try
something new, such as answering a question in class, because you might make a
mistake. (We learn some of our best lessons in life through the mistakes we make.)
Respect effort and Learning
a. Be on time.
b. Use class time well. You will often be given time to start your homework or other
assignment in class. Books should stay open until you are dismissed. The classroom is
meant to be a work environment. At no time are students to get up early to line up at
the door, especially when a T.O.C. is present.
Respect your community and environment
a. Please use recycle bins
b. Take care of schoolbooks and equipment. (last class of day to stack chairs)
Written work submitted in blue or black ink only.
Please refer to agenda to remind yourself about the use of I-pods, cell phones in
class and the policy on cheating (plagiarizing, copying etc.) MLA citation style to
be used for bibliography and citations
