Happy New Year
everyone and welcome to the first guide of 2015 for Calderstones Mansion House. We're feeling
excited about the events and activities we've got planned for the New Year and hope this guide
provides you with plenty to look forward to. Whether you fancy refining your swing dancing skills
ata 1940's tea dance, getting your creative hat on in craft sessions, or attending a weekly shared
reading group, chances are there will be something for you.
‘At The Reader Organisation, we work to connect people and communities through shared reading
‘groups and as part of our work we aim to transform Calderstones Mansion House into an
International Centre for Reading and Wellbeing. We are pleased to say that this project is
progressing well, and we have recently signed a lease with Liverpool City Council for Calderstones
Mansion House, Coach and Stable yards giving us residency for 125 years. This means we are now
ina very positive position to move further ahead with our plans to develop a home for our growing
community of readers. The first phase of this will include working with members of the community
to raise funds for vital mansion refurbishment, as well as working together to make sure local voices
are heard in the process.
We are delighted to say that we have recently been awarded a capital grant from the Social
Investment Business to create an Interactive Story Centre for young people in the Barn and Stable
Buildings. Work for this is now well underway and we're looking forward to opening the doors to
the public in the near future. If you would like to find out more, please do pop in and talk to us
or see inside the guide for contact details. Here at The Reader, we love meeting new people,
sharing stories and spreading the word about our work, so we'd really like to hear from you.
Finally, don’t forget our unique shared reading groups
remain at the core of what we do. If you haven't had
a taste of a group yet, do come along and experience
one for yourself. There is no pressure to read aloud,
you can simply sit back, listen and enjoy a cup of tea
and we will be delighted to have you with us.
Details of the many groups we now run
in the mansion can be found in this guide.

FreeFrom Dewy Dreams
From dewy dreams, my soul, arise,
From love's deep slumber and from death,
For lo! the trees are full of sighs
Whose leaves the morn admonisheth.
Eastward the gradual dawn prevails
Where softly-burning fires appear,
Making to tremble all those veils
Of grey and golden gossamer.
While sweetly, gently, secretly,
‘The flowery bells of morn are stirred
And the wise choirs of faery
Begin (innumerous!) to be heard.
- James Joyce
