Scientific Method Brain Break

Make Observations/Ask a Question?

Why does
the sky turn
gray when it
rains?

There many things

on our earth that
we are curious
about. Take a walk
outside in your
neighborhood or on
the playground and
observe the things
around you. This is
a great way to start
the Scientific
Method! Once you
have found
something that
interest you, ask a

What causes
a bucket
filled with
water to
crack when
the water
freezes?

Do Your Research

Research is one of the most

important parts of the Scientific
Method. Research can help you
understand more about your
topic. Research can also help you
discover what others before you
learned when studying the same
topic. Therefore take your time to
go to the library or peruse the
internet to find an abundant
amount of information on your
topic. Dont forget to record this
data or information you find in a
journal or Science notebook!

Watch the following video to learn

about a great research site just for
kids!!

Construct your Hypothesis

A hypothesis is more than

just an educated guess its
an prediction on what you
think the outcome of your
experiment will be. The key
word in this is educated. To
make sure you have an
accurate or good hypothesis
you must make sure youve
done your research.

Hypothesis statements are

formulated as follows:
If _________, then this
will____________
An example would be, If the water faucet is
opened, then the amount of water
flowing will increase

Test Hypothesis/Experiment

Now its time for the part you have

been waiting for, the experiment!!
This is where you determine if your
hypothesis is correct. Its best to
repeat the experiment three times,
recording your data for each test.
Make sure to note where something
may change or differ in each
experiment. Remember when you
are experimenting only one
variable (any factor, trait, or
condition that can exist in differing
amounts or types) should change at
a time leaving everything else the
same in each trial.

Safety is key when experimenting make

sure to use safety equipment!!

Wear
your
goggles!

Put on
your
Gloves
!!

Analyze Data/Draw Conclusion

Now that you have completed

your experiment and recorded
your data, its time to analyze the
information you have recorded.
When you analyze you look or
examine all information closely to
see what happened during your
experiment. Once you have taken
a good look at your information
now you can draw a conclusion.
When you make conclusion you
state what your findings are after
studying the results.

Report Your Results

Now that you have went

through the entire process of
the Scientific Method, its time
to share your results with
others. This can be done by
using a display board. The
display board should have every
part of the Scientific Method
shown on there using pictures,
graphics, words and examples.
Be creative with this part of the
task, its your show piece, on
display for everyone to see!
