I Wonder

by Jeannie Kirby
I wonder why the grass is green,
And why the wind is never seen?
Who taught the birds to build a nest,
And told the trees to take a rest?
And when the moon is not quite round,
Where can the missing bit be found?
Who lights the stars, when they blow out,
And makes the lightning flash about?
Who paints the rainbow in the sky,
And hangs the fluffy clouds so high?
Why is it now, do you suppose,
That Dad wont tell me if he knows?

Paraphrase of the Poem

Couplet 1
The persona wonders why grass is green in colour and why the wind
can be felt but not seen.
Couplet 2
He wonders about the invisible power or person who taught the birds
to build their nest. Trees have been asked not to move or to stop
growing as if they are taking a rest from their work.
Couplet 3
The moon is not always a full moon. It can be at half moon or crescent
shape. The persona wonders where the missing part has gone.

Couplet 4
Stars shine at night and during the day they do not shine. The persona
wonders who makes the stars shine again. He wonders too who is
responsible for the flashes of lightning.
Couplet 5
The persona asks about the person who painted the rainbow and gives
it all the colours. He wonders also who puts the fluffy clouds. So high in
the sky.
Couplet 6
Finally, the persona wonders why his father will not explain to him the
reasons for all these happenings. He is not sure his father knows the
answer.
