FROM THE DIRECTOR

It has been a busy year at the Sundance Institute, with our programs growing and our artists bringing more and more talent to the screen and stage. At Sundance, our mission is to
engage independent artists with an audience and group of peers that will challenge them
and nurture their talent.
This year, our Sundance Film Festival was more popular than ever with a record 12,218
submissions work. The categoried screenings were a success and further categories were
included. A new category, a first of its kind for Sundance, was included this year: a
category dedicated to films by children, Sundance Kids. Sixteen films represented both the
U.S. Dramatic and U.S. Documentary competition categories, and twelve films were
chosen for both the World Cinema Dramatic and World Cinema Documentary sections.
The Festival gained much attention due to the screening and further acquisition of Zach
Braff s fully kick-started project, Wish I Was Here. The Festival also honored the late
Roger Ebert.
Several of our programs hit the ground running this year, including our Womens
Initiative and Diversity Initiative. In January 2014, we published Phase II of our
comprehensive study authored by Dr. Tracy Smith considering the barriers and
opportunities facing women content creators in independent American film. We are very
excited to see the next phase of this project. The Institute has defined diversity as one of
the core values driving our work and has launched several fellowship programs to
support filmmakers. Our Knight Fellows Project will be expanding in the next three years
to include further communities such as Akron, Charlotte, Detroit, Macon, Miami, San
Jose, and St. Paul.
From our community of passionate individuals,
Thank you for a great year!

Breanna Randolph

OUR MISSION
Sundance Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the discovery and
development of independent artists and audiences. Through its programs, the
Institute seeks to discover, support, and inspire independent film and theatre artists
from the United States and around the world, and to introduce audiences
to their new work.

OUR VISION
We believe that a story driven by an individual, authentic voice can awaken new
ideas that have the power to delight and entertain, push creative boundaries, spark
new levels of empathy and understanding, and even lead to social change.
We support independent storytellers and advance the impact of
their work in the world.

OUR PROGRAMS

Our Programs

The Documentary Film Program supports the development, production and presentation of nonfiction films
around the world. The Documentary Fund provides $1M-$2M in non-recoupable financing annually to
documentary filmmakers selected through an open application process. The Program invites Grantees to
participate in the Documentary Edit and Story Lab, Music and Sound Design Lab for Documentary Film,
and provides ongoing advice and resources throughout the filmmaking process
The Feature Film Program embraces the discovery and development of independent
filmmakers, encouraging a rigorous creative process with a focus on original and deeply
resonant storytelling. The January Screenwriters Lab is the point of entry to the program,
where 12 filmmakers are selected through an open application process.

Each summer, Sundance Institute holds Music and Sound Design Labs for composers and filmmakers working
on feature and documentary films. Selected through an open application process, composers gain first-hand
experience composing for film while in residence at Skywalker Ranch.
The Programs Day Labs provide opportunities for more composers and directors to hear from leaders in the field
and gain insights into the art and business of scoring film.

Our Programs

Sundance Institutes commitment to supporting Native American artists is woven throughout our history.
From Labs to Fellowships to screenings and gatherings around the world, the Programs
offerings are designed in response to the specific needs of Native storytellers.
New Frontier at Sundance Institute is a dynamic initiative that identifies and fosters
independent artists working at the convergence of film, art, media, live performance,
music and technology. Since 2007, the New Frontier exhibition at the Sundance Film
Festival has provided the highest level of curation in the emerging field, showcasing fiction,
non-fiction and hybrid storytelling with installations, performances and films.

The centerpiece of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program is the Theatre Lab, a three-week play development
retreat supporting the creation of new work by playwrights, directors, composers and librettists who are
selected through an open application process. With a focus on supporting individual artists throughout their
careers, the Program extends invitations to Theatre Lab alumni to participate in retreats for playwrights and
directors, Labs for ensemble and musical work, and to access creative and financial resources.

This year, the Sundance Film Festival was held from

January 16-January 26, 2014 in Park City, Utah.
Screenings also took place in Salt Lake City, Ogden, and
Sundance Resort in Utah. The festival welcomed 117
Feature Films, represented 37 countries work from
around the world, and selected 54 first-time filmmakers
to be showcased. The Festival received a record 12,218
submissions to this years event. The Festival was an
overwhelming success with its first category dedicated
to childrens films, Sundance Kids. The Festival also
hosted a panel titled Free Fail in which success through
failure was discussed. The late Roger Ebert was
honored at the Festival with the premiere of a
biographical documentary Life Itself by Steve James.
The Festival opened with Whiplash by Damien Chazelle
and ckosed with Rudderless by William H. Macy.

Sundance deepens the

resolve of artists, bringing
them together in a
creative community so
that they know
they are not alone.
