The planetary bearing in the overdrive unit of Dodge 4-speed transmissions can fail repeatedly even when properly assembled. One cause is a weld on the planet body that is not filed flush, allowing the bearing to crack or break on the raised weld surface as it rotates. To prevent this, any welds on the planet pins must be filed or sanded flush before installing the planetary assembly. Additional noises may be caused by teeth marks on the thrust plate from the sun gear or from rough fourth gear plates; using smooth frictions can resolve the latter issue.

O/D Planetary Bearing Failure Repeat failure of the Overdrive planetary bearing may occur even when properly assembled and there is no evidence of a lack of lube (parts black and blue from heat). One cause is a weld above flush where the needle bearing rides on the planet body. When the bearing is installed and rotates over this bump (weld) it will crack or break the race, making a whining noise in 4th, and eventually destroys the O/D planet. ALWAYS file, sand, or grind the welds flush BEFORE installing planet.
Additional noise info: DEEP
teeth imprints on inside diameter of thrust plate from sun gear may cause click noise on 3-4 upshift. Quick rattle on 3-4 up/down shifts may be caused by 4th plates - use smooth frictions.
Thrust Overdrive Sun This bearing may fail due to weld material on the planetary pins being too high. ALWAYS file or sand any welds on the pinion pins flush before installing the planetary.
