Answer each of the following questions.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF A FLOWERING PLANT
Without bees, plants would find it difficult to make new
plants. Pollen is carried by insects or blown by the wind
from one flower to another. This is called pollination.

1)

Match up the key words with their

meanings.

POLLINATION

When seeds from plant are

scattered.

When pollen reaches the new flower, it meets egg cells

in the ovary to make seeds. This is called fertilisation.

FERTILISATION

When a new seed starts to

grow.

The new seeds are then scattered. This is called seed

dispersal. Sometimes a seed will be eaten by an animal
or carried on its fur. Sometimes seeds can travel by the
wind (e.g. dandelion seeds) or by water. Sometimes the
seeds will go into the ground when the plant dies.

SEED DISPERSAL

When pollen from one flower

is carried to another.

The seeds will start to grow if they have the right

conditions. This is called germination. They need
water, warmth and soil to germinate. As the plant grows
more, it needs nutrients from the soil and light to keep
growing. When the flower blooms, insects arrive and the
life cycle starts all over again!

2)

Verbs like 'think and 'believe' are used to

show your opinion about something.
Underline the opinion verbs below.
I find that cats
can be wonderful
companions.

I believe that cats

should be given
warm milk if it's cold.

GERMINATION

When pollen from one flower

meets the egg cells in another
flower and makes seeds.

Why do you think this is called a life 'cycle'?

Trees and plants don't always just provide shelter, they
can also provide a source of food for the animals that live
there. For example, birds that build their nests in trees can
feed off the bugs that live in the bark. Others use the
canopy as shelter to protect them from being eaten or as
a base where they can wait for prey to walk by.

Answer each of the following questions.

Living things can be split into three groups:
producers, consumers and decomposers.
Producers are living things that make their own
energy. These are often green plants, who use
sunlight to make their own energy. They don't need
to eat anything o they just need sunlight, water and
Carbon Dioxide from the air to make energy.

Consumers are living things that can't make their

own food, so they get their energy from eating
other living things. In other words, they eat things!
These range from animals who eat meat (e.g.
foxes) to those that eat plants (e.g. cows).
Finally, decomposers are living things that get their
energy by breaking dead and dying things down.
For example, bacteria and fungi which breed when
foods rot.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF A BIRD

c __ __ __ __ __ __ __

2)

Write the stages of the bird's life cycle in

order.

Birds begin life inside an egg. One or both parents will

sit on the eggs to keep them warm until they hatch.

When the birds hatch, they're called nestlings. The

nestlings have little or no features, so the parent birds
will bring them food so they can grow.
The nestlings grow into fledglings, which begin to feed
themselves but still need their parents. At the end of this
stage, the birds leave the nest and their parents.
Some birds migrate for the winter, but by late winter /
early spring, the birds are ready to find a mate. When
they have found a mate, the couple will build the nest.
Most of the time, the female builds it.

After the nest is completed, the couple mates

and the female lays eggs to commence the

Answer each of the following questions.

Animals constantly struggle to survive. Unless they are
pets or in a zoo, they have to go out and find their daily
food. There are two main ways that animals compete:

1)

1) Animals contend for the same food.

Many animals consume the same types of food. For
instance, mice are eaten by foxes as well as birds of
prey like owls. This means that the foxes and owls are
competing for the same food supply. If one gets their
first, the other will have to find something else to eat!

2)
2) Animals compete to survive.
In order to survive, animals have to eat and also make
sure they are not eaten by predators. For example,
mice are competing with foxes. Foxes will try to eat the
mice and the mice need to try and avoid being eaten.
Being an animal can be competitive, so abilities like
speed, eyesight and hunting skills become extremely
important in trying to survive.

Life in the animal kingdom isn't always a fight for
survival. Sometimes animals benefit and help each
other in interesting ways. Here are some amazing
examples :
Egrets feed off parasites, such as lice and ticks,
found on large mammals (like hippos). Sometimes
the hippos open their mouths so that the birds can
pick up food there.
Some sea anemones bind themselves to the shell
of hermit crabs. This allows the hermit crab to use
the anemone's stings to catch food, while the
anemone benefits from getting moved around to
feed.
Some people think that that ravens and wolves
benefit from being near one another. While wolves
are able to make food available for ravens
(through carcasses), ravens are able to reveal the
location of prey to wolves through their calls.

Answer each of the following questions.

Different materials have different properties. Some, such as
metal, conduct electricity. Some melt easily. Others, like
paper, dissolve in water. Metals like steel are magnetic.
These properties affect how each material is treated when it
is a waste product. In particular, the properties affect whether
a product can be recycled or is a pollutant.
- RECYCLED MATERIALS
Materials like paper, plastic and glass can be recycled. In the
case of plastic and glass, this is because the material can be
melted down and formed into new products. Paper can be
recycled because it is made of fibres which become pulp
when soaked in water.
- POLLUTING MATERIALS
Materials that do not rot or break down easily, like plastic,
can be pollutants. If they are not disposed of carefully, they
can stay in the environment for a long time. Some waste
products are poisonous and so they become pollutants. For
example, the waste materials from a factory may be pumped
into a nearby river, polluting it.

Change the indirect speech (reported) into

direct speech (quoted).
The first one is done for you as an example.

Answer each of the following questions.

WHAT ARE METALS USED FOR?
There are lots of different types of metal. Each type has
different properties and so is used for different things. Copper
is flexible and conducts electricity, so it is used in electrical
wiring. Car bodies are made from steel, which is mostly iron,
because it is very strong and easy to press into the correct
shape. Aluminium is a very light metal and is easily shaped,
so it is used for making drinks cans out of. Light bulb
filaments are made from tungsten because it does not melt
at the very high temperature needed to make it white hot.
WHAT ARE PLASTICS USED FOR?
Just like metals, there are different types of plastics too.
Polystyrene is very light and resists impacts, so it used for
packing hard objects. PVC is durable, doesn't rust and is
cheaper than metal, so it is often used for water pipes and
plumbing. Polypropylene (PP) is used in car interiors and
bottles. Plastics don't conduct heat as well as metal, so they
are good for making saucepan handles from. They also don't
conduct electricity, so they are used to put around copper
wires to insulate them.

Change the direct speech (quoted)

Answer each of the following questions.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF A FLOWERING PLANT
Without bees, plants would find it difficult to make new
plants. Pollen is carried by insects or blown by the wind
from one flower to another. This is called pollination.

1)

Match up the key words with their

meanings.

POLLINATION

When seeds from plant are

scattered.

When pollen reaches the new flower, it meets egg cells

in the ovary to make seeds. This is called fertilisation.

FERTILISATION

When a new seed starts to

grow.

The new seeds are then scattered. This is called seed

dispersal. Sometimes a seed will be eaten by an animal
or carried on its fur. Sometimes seeds can travel by the
wind (e.g. dandelion seeds) or by water. Sometimes the
seeds will go into the ground when the plant dies.

SEED DISPERSAL

When pollen from one flower

is carried to another.

The seeds will start to grow if they have the right

conditions. This is called germination. They need
water, warmth and soil to germinate. As the plant grows
more, it needs nutrients from the soil and light to keep
growing. When the flower blooms, insects arrive and the
life cycle starts all over again!

2)

Verbs like 'think and 'believe' are used to

For example, bacteria and fungi which breed when
foods rot.

When

Answer each of the following questions.

THE LIFE CYCLE OF AN INSECT

1)

Write the four stages of an insect's

life cycle in order.

There are two types of life cycle for insects. Some insects
have a complete metamorphosis, which means they
change into something else. Examples of these are
butterflies. These insects have four stages in their
life cycle:

ADULT
LARVA
PUPA
EGG

egg: unborn stage.

larva: young stage -- this is when most of the feeding is
done (they usually look like worms)

2)

pupa: inactive (no feeding) stage where the insect

something else).
adult: final, breeding stage (having grown wings).
Not all insects go to sleep and wake up a completely
different animal. Some insects go from eggs to
nymphs (where they eat to grow) and then become adults.
Examples of these are dragonflies and grasshoppers.

Answer each of the following questions.

Add more description into these
sentences by using two adjectives to
make a noun group.

1)

Write down the benefits of the

partnership between wolves and
ravens.
a) WOLVES benefit from ravens because
They reveal the location of prey to wolves

The first one is done for you as an example.

Answer each of the following questions.

WHAT ARE METALS USED FOR?
There are lots of different types of metal. Each type has
different properties and so is used for different things. Copper
is flexible and conducts electricity, so it is used in electrical
wiring. Car bodies are made from steel, which is mostly iron,
because it is very strong and easy to press into the correct
shape. Aluminium is a very light metal and is easily shaped,
so it is used for making drinks cans. Light bulb filaments are
made from tungsten because it does not melt at the very high
temperature needed to make it white hot.
