Biology 11, Period 1, 5
Squid Dissection Lab

Lesson Purpose:
This lesson is designed to introduce the concept of dissection and the
appropriate protocol to the students. This lab will also familiarize students with
the anatomy of an invertebrate organism. Students will then use their findings to
compare with a vertebrate organism when we dissect the frog next week.
Students will also pay close attention to receive a hands on experience with
animals, as well as follow scientific protocol and regulations in terms of written
lab reports.
Student Outcomes:
Use organisms found in a local or regional ecosystem to demonstrate an
understanding of fundamental principles of taxonomy. (316-5)
Describe the anatomy and physiology of a representative organism from each
kingdom, including a representative virus. (316-6)
Analyze and explain the life cycle of a representative organism from each
kingdom, including a representative virus. (313-1)
Authentic Student Assessment:
Students will be required to pass in both a draft and a final copy of a formal lab
report following this dissection for both formative and summative assessment.
Diagnostic assessment will take place through observation and monitoring during
the lab period to ensure students are following protocol, are participating,
actively working as team members with their group, and learning through a
hands on experience.
Prior Knowledge:
Students will be using their knowledge from research and the pre-lab report and
lecture from yesterdays lesson.
Students may have some general background on invertebrate organisms from
lessons in Science 10 and Science 9.
Students would have some exposure to dissection if they have taken Oceans 11
(this class does not have any students who have done that).
This is the first dissection for almost all students in this class.
Lesson:
Cell phones will be collected from students prior to beginning todays class. We
have had a previous discussion about why we cannot use cell phones during a
lab.
To introduce the squid dissection, we will watch Dancing Squid from
Discovery on Youtube.

I will pass back Pre-Lab and remind students that they can use the diagrams to
help them identify parts of the squid.
Following this, I will remind students the importance of following the proper
protocol with dissections and stress the importance of steering away from
mutilation.
Before beginning the lab portion of the class, I will remind students of what
procedures they need to follow today. (Listed below)
Report check list, proper diagrams (everyone stops), you only need gloves if you
are the one touching the squid, this becomes your rough copy, ask questions,
clean up mode.
Following instructions, students will form into their groups (predetermined
during the prelab), and they will begin the dissection procedure, carefully
following the Lab Handout which they have been given.
During the morning period, students will focus primarily on the external
anatomy of the squid, and during the afternoon they will focus primarily on the
internal anatomy of the squid.
I will be circulating the class to ensure students are following the correct
procedure, and also to answer student questions.

Materials:
Class set of Lab Handouts
Microscopes
Dissecting Kits
Dissecting Trays
Paper Towel
Soap
Squid
Toothpicks/pins
SMARTBoard
Projector
Computer
Link for Dancing Squid Video
Rubbermaid Bin
Disposable gloves
Returned Pre-lab
Group Cards
Closure:
About 5 minutes before the bell, students will go into clean up mode, where
they must place the squid in the appropriate container, dispose of
gloves/towels/etc., and wash and dry their utensils and counters.
Following this, students will return to their seats. At this point, I will inform
students where they should be at (external diagram should be complete) and I
will remind students that we will pick this up last period.

Professional Growth Target:

Ensure that all students are working effectively in the lab and following directions
and protocol.
Effectively deal with cell phone use during the lab.
