ALASKA
A SNEAK INTO ONE OF AMERICAS BEAUTIFULEST STATES
By: Student PREFACE With the cold retreating back and forth in the beginning of March in Ohio here, its a wonderful time to be talking about Alaska! The last frontier is mostly known for its cold weathers - but is that all? With a unique past, wild fight with Mother Nature, and leading spot in the business factor, the 49th state is almost haunting. But as we heard from Joseph L. Carson, Alaska is still one of the most beautiful places on earth. Alaska is definitely beauteous, but there is more than just that. THE HISTORY First, as a part of Russia, Alaska was sold to William H. Seward of the United States for $7.2 million dollars. For just two cents an acre, many started calling this Sewards Folly. That nickname was soon taken away after the discovery of gold mining, oil production, and tourists. Yet, Alaska was still low in the population rankings. By 2012, the population was only about 730,000, with an area of 663,300 sq miles (1.718 million km);a large state with a small population. Aurora Webmasters reminded us that Alaska had started off as a district, turning into an organized territory, and finally coming into statehood by the third of January, 1959. According to Thomas Carson & Mary Bonks, Many people increased the population to grant territorial status, but it started to come down again all due to military installations & war. CRAZY ADVENTURES Alaska is known for its harsh weather, intense isolation and mistakes that can cause a deadly path in your future. Some environmentalists have been trying to protect Alaskas beautiful environment, and not just because of the oil contamination. Like Joseph L. Carson said, Alaska is not always a place for those who hope to relish lifes creature comforts out in the wild. Many, such as Christopher McCandless himself of Into The Wild, have dreamt of living the Alaskan dream and have not come out. What happens out there is not always what most dream of. Be careful out there. FAMOUS INDUSTRIES Despite the fact that Alaska is known for its rough interiors, this large state is founded by its richness of industries, the biggest reason that people flock to live there. Like you might have heard about in the second paragraph, Alaska was soon founded by the discovery of gold mining, oil production, and tourists. That oil soon caused an economic boom in Alaska, beating the slow gold mining and coming in second for the leading source of energy for the USA. Unfortunately, damage occurred in 1989, making many Alaskans (and many news) wonder: is there still contamination after the cleanup? Tourists still continued to roam around, looking at the beautiful Northern Lights and water sources, many even bothering to go climb one of the highest mountains of the world (Mount McKinley). Hopefully, some of those tourists decide to stay in the Alaskan valley and increase the population by at least one. CONCLUSION The former Russian-American state is still in its new age even now. Only fifty-five years after its official statehood, and some still forget about the oil-contaminated state. This second-to-last state is least known about its mindless past and ventures, but hopefully in the future we will become more acknowledged of its presence. With a low population and amazing sightings, this small state is beginning to become admired by everyone already. A courageous history, mindwobbling escapades, and tourist friendly sites, this state is no match for the lower forty-eight.
