Objective: Students will use various measurement tools and recognize the difference

between nonstandard units of measurement and standard units of measurement.

NYS Learning Standards:
Standard 1: Students will use mathematical analysis, scientific inquiry, and engineering
designs, as appropriate, to pose questions, seek answers, and develop solutions.
Standard 2: Students will access, generate, process, and transfer information using
appropriate technologies.
Standard 6: Students will understand the relationships and common themes that connect
mathematics, science, and technology and apply the themes to these and other areas of
learning.
Standard 7: Students will apply the knowledge and thinking skills of mathematics,
science, and technology to address real-life problems and make informed decisions.
NYS Core Standards:
Measurement and Data: Solve problems involving measurement and estimation of
intervals of time, liquid volumes, and masses of objects.
Rational: To show the different ways to measuring items and stress that standard units of
measurement give more accuracy than nonstandard units.
Materials:
Leedy, Loreen. Measuring Penny. New York: Henry Holt, 1997. Print.
Smartboard (PowerPoint)
Ruler
Tape measure
Thermometer
Cold water
Chair
Paper cut-outs
Clock
Dog Biscuits
Q-tips
Scale
Clipboard
Development/Procedures:
Introduction: To introduce the lesson I will begin by asking the students to think of
examples of standard and nonstandard units of measurement. Then I will give the
students a moment to share a response with their neighbor (to eliminate the chance of a
student having no response). Next I will call students up to the Smartboard. The board
will be split in two sections. One section will say Standard Unit and the other side will
say Nonstandard Unit. At the bottom of the screen there will be images of different

measuring tools. The students will click on a tool and drag it to the appropriate side of
the chart.
Instructional Strategies:
-

I will show the students a Powerpoint presentation on standard and nonstandard

units of measurement.
Throughout the presentation there are various questions. I will ask the children to
think of an answer individually.
I will then ask the students to pair with a neighbor and discuss their answer.
(Think-pair-share) This model will occur a few times throughout the presentation.
Then we will share the responses aloud as a class.
Following the presentation, I will make connections to a story we read the
previous day. I will point out the different types of measurement the character
used in the story.
Then I will group the students in groups of four.
I will explain the directions for the activity.
The students will each have an assigned role in the group.
Each group will be assigned a station. At each station there will be two parts that
will be measured. The tools will be found at the station as well as a piece of paper
with directions.
The students will measure each subject twice (once with the nonstandard unit and
once with the standard unit).
The students will be given three minutes at each station to complete their
measurements. I will cue the students when it is time to rotate.
The students will have a sheet to record their measurements on.
Once the students complete all the stations they will return to their seats.
Once the stations are complete we will come up with a conclusion together as a
class.

Adaptations:
For one student whose IEP states mathematics be read aloud to him there will be
assistance available to read the sentences verbally to him.
I will have grouped the students using a strategy of mixing lower students with higher
students to add support.
Technology Component:
The Smartboard will be utilized for a PowerPoint presentation.
Closure: The students will develop a conclusion. The students will share their responses
with the class.
Assessment:

Short Term: Students will be able to complete the activity. I will visually observe that
the student accomplish measuring.
Long Term: Students will continuing with the measurement unit and will need this
foundation for future lessons. Students will be tested on this topic.
