PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

Personal Mission Statement

My past does not define me but shapes me into the person I chose to be today as I move
through the ebb and flow of life. Moving through pivotal stages of my life, meaning making with
reflection has become hallmark to my growth and development thus encouraging a healthy thirst
for taking calculated risks (Merriam, 2007) (Schlossberg, 1984). When I do something out of my
every day life I learn about myself, the world, and how the two interact.
My comfort zone has expanded through inter- and intra-personal exploration, and that only
encourages me to stretch it even further. By stepping into conversations and critical reflections I
continue to learn about the identities that define my existence in this world. I am a white,
multiracial, heterosexual woman with many other privileges. I recognize my power and influence
as an individual and as a part of our social systems. Through this I am actively aware of the space
I take, do not take, and should take in order to be a change agent in our oppressive society (Tatum,
2002).
I am a strong individual with a blessed past and promising future in which I will embrace
all whom I encounter and all that I experience as I shape the world and it shapes me (Astin &
Astin, 2000).
