Subject Area: Math with Music integration

Grade: 3
Lesson Title: Musical Fun with Fractions!
Brief lesson description
This smart board interactive game introduces and explores fractions in math and music.

Students will learn to match 1, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 to picture representations and musical notes.

Students will learn how many parts (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) are in a whole.
Provincial Content Standards/Outcome
Note: This activity can be used in grade 3 classrooms to introduce fractions or can be used in
activating prior knowledge at the beginning of a fraction unit in grade 4.

p 101 NB Grade 3 Specific Curriculum Outcomes:

13) Demonstrate an understanding of fractions by: explaining that a fraction represents a part
of a whole; describing situations in which fractions are used; comparing fractions of the same
whole with like denominators.

p 109 NB Grade 4 Specific Curriculum Outcomes

8) Demonstrate an understanding of fractions less than or equal to one by using concrete and
pictorial representations to: name and record fractions for the parts of a whole or a set;
compare and order fractions; model and explain that for different wholes, provide examples of
where fractions are used.

Technology Resources needed (hardware and software)

Smartboard

Laptop for the teacher with notebook software

Personal laptops or netbooks for students (optional)
Procedure
As a class students will complete all 5 activities. Have students form a semi circle around the
smart board, or be in a formation where everyone can see the smart board easily.

Divide students into 5 groups. Each group will physically complete one of the activities on the
smart board while the rest of the class follows along.

Activity 1: Students must match picture representations in the form of pie pieces to the
numerical values of 1, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8.

Activity 2: Music and Math: students match the note values of whole, half, quarter, and eighth
notes to the numerical values of 1, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8

Activity 3: Students match picture representations in the form of pie pieces to the note values
of whole, half, quarter, and eighth.

Activity 4: How many ways can you make a whole? Students discover how many 1/2s make
a whole, how many 1/4s make a whole, how many 1/8s make a whole by moving the 1/2, 1/4,
and 1/8 pie pieces to cover the whole pies.**

Activity 5: How many (1/2, 1/4, 1/8) notes make a whole note? Students discover how many
1/2 notes make a whole note, how many 1/4 notes are in a whole note and how many 1/8th
notes are in a whole note.

**Note: Activity 4 can be used as an extension activity to explore different combinations that
make a whole (ex: 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/2 or 1/2 +1/4 + 1/8 + 1/8).

Assessment Method
Teacher will formatively assess student learning by making notes based off of student
performance on the matching activities.

All students will complete the Exit Quiz, which is the last slide of the smartboard activity.
This can be completed in various ways depending on teachers resources and students
technological abilities:

a) Students use personal laptops and teacher walks around to see their final answer.

b) Students use personal laptops, take screen shot of final answer and send it to the teacher.

c) Teacher prints out the final slide and students draw lines to match the notes and shapes to
the numerical fraction.

d) Teacher projects final slide on the smart board and students answer the questions on a
blank piece of paper.

Exit Quiz Answers:

1=whole pie=whole note
1/2=half a pie=half note
1/4=quarter of a pie=quarter note
