George McClellan to Abraham Lincoln Letter

For this final review, Ive been a behind. I was late to post the initial response. These past
days have been difficult, taking my medication for pain that keeps radiating. Ive been distracted.
I enjoyed this class, at first I thought I wasnt going to like it. The documents interpretations have
helped keep my interest in this class. These interpretations better than reading the text books, we
have accounts from first hand people. In the letter from McClellan to Lincoln, its mainly
McClellan talking to Lincoln who has replaced him as president. His main concern is fighting the
rebellion, not as a war but a fight against political organizations. He strongly agrees that
prohibition of slavery should be a topic for Lincoln to dwell on, as it is an important issue. Also
that military power should not be allowed to interfere with serving the law. They have public
forces for that. The constitution and the union should be preserved whatever the cost may be,
treasure or blood. Slaves that want protection from the military would receive it. It appears that
McClellan is trying to be a leader, maybe feeling inadequate after having to be replaced. He
wanted a say in the current situation. It is very clear to what McClellan is saying that they must
protect those who seek it and also to protect the Constitutional rights of those who respect it.
