PROJECT 24 Water Lift Pump PROJECT BACKGROUND ‘When we were first married, Gill and I lived in a farm cot- tage that had a well and a pump to draw our water. I was forever climbing down into the well to sort out the leathar flap valva at tha bottom of th pump chamber. It would gat locked with mud, stones, grit, ead frogs and all manner of things Life with such rustic charm was never lacking in ‘wet, muddy, cold chores, ‘That old lift pump was 2 boautifully simple pigce of machinery. Basically I's just two valves working tagether. ‘When the handle is lifted, the rod goes down, the valve at the bottom of the chamber closes, the valve at the bottom of the piston cpens and water rushes to the top side of the piston. When the pump handle is pushed dows, the rod comes up, tne valve at the hottom of the chamber apens, the valve in the piston closes and water floods the bottom chamher, ready for the next pump stroke, FROJECT OVERVIEW Study the project picture (right), the working drawings (Figure 24-24) and the templates (Figure 24-28). While tho various components aro relatively easy to make, the assembly 1s convoluted, The piobiem is the component parts ere short grained and fragile, with ots of curved slender sections that run across tha grain, pis thore are lote of parte, The moaeuremente can be moulified, except jor the rod end chamber lengths. If you want to alter the size of the project, use stiff paper and pins to build @ pro- totype first. We used English brown oak for the hase and back boards, Amorioan oak for the handlo and sorap pisces of pine, cherry and plum for the rest Select woods mat nave rich color and grain pattems from one component to the next. MAKING THE BACK, BASE AND LUG BOARDS Study the design (Figures 24-2A and B), noting how ‘tha base hoard, backaoard and the small lug hoard are made from °/."-thick wood, with the various curves drawn with a compass, The greater part of the base is set to the iront of the backboard, with the tive boards fixed by aglied-snd-peqsed batten, Plane your wood to a finished tickness of /' It should be free of splits and knots. If you're using a ‘tough wood like the brown oak I used, then it's also a good. idea to sight along its length checking for twists. ‘Draw the dasign out with a mule, square and compass, and cut the pieces out cn your scroll savy, Set the backboard at right angles to the base and support it with a piece of ecrap. ‘Decide where the lug needs to be positioned, anc then dry fitit in place with acouple of dowels. MAKING THE CHAMBER WALLS AND VALVE BALL Flane the wood to a finished thickness of about */<", Don’t worry if it’s alittle oversize, as it’s better tobe elightly tao thick than too thin, as long ae the thickneas isuniform. ‘Trace the desion from the working éraivings, then, poncil pross transfer tho tracad linas through to the ‘best face ol your wood, Remember to position the tracings 0 the grain runs up through the walis of the chamber. ‘With tha design Iaid out, cut out tha pisces on your ‘scroll sav (Pigure 24-9), While it's all pretty straighttorward, pe caretul wnen you come to the curves. ‘You don't want to go tao fast or too hard and split the wood across the traaile short grain.
