PERSONAL STATEMENT
I would like to study product design in university as I love the subject; the idea of
turning a thought into a creation naturally excites me. I have an old cherry tree
in my garden, from the age of 5 I somehow used to shape dead branches into the
appearance of a gun, although this may sound funny to you I believe it was my
first spark of inspiration that led to the passion I have for the subject today. This
subject gives gateways to fresh ideas as the imagination is limitless and varies
from person to person. Modern society was the main source of inspiration for me
to study product design at A-level; we see many complex innovative creations in
astonishingly very simple products like tables or chairs.
Product design over these past two years really and truly has been an
invigorating part of my life. I was studying resistant materials in my GCSEs and
enjoyed it, however we were not given enough freedom. Now based upon
experience I drive my project through sheer initiative, I have learnt to become
more independent. I also love the experimental side to product design, for
example in maths there is only one answer to a problem, however in product
design there are many answers to a particular problem which can be approached
in various ways which provide me with the freedom to exercise my imagination.
In terms of my skills, I once crafted 2 replica, Kenyan chess pieces I made 2
summers ago. This required great visualisation, attention to detail and practical
skills as each chess piece had a very detailed figure. I also use visualisation to
successfully determine whether or not a design meets functionality based on
physics, materials and shapes. Related to design software, Prodesktop is
something I really enjoy using. I have perfected the basics of this software and
have implemented some of my designs on it and my wish of creating something
as complicated as a modern aircraft is close to achievable. I was perhaps the
only student in my class consistently going to after school CAD sessions, and
hope that my determination will allow me to design complex products. There is
nothing according to drawing styles or effects of perspective drawing, in my ALevel syllabus that I do not enjoy or have not practised. I want to be with the
experts in the field of 2 point perspective, modelling, isometric drawing,
rendering and particularly CAD. I am especially excited to be able to use
advanced CAM systems that will be available to me in university, witnessing this
will be like that of a childs dream visiting Disney Land.
Outside of academic studies I busy myself with a lot of wood work within my
home. I have worked on as small as making a picture frame to remaking a shed
and seem to have an obsession to the hobby. As a result of my hobby I have
dramatically increased the quality of my academic work with regards to
implementation and have also learnt to work fast under pressure without
compromising quality. I also consistently watch a TV programme known as
Grand designs which is a programme that depicts the steps in manufacture of
innovative homes, it is inspiring to see people risk their very homes in order to
achieve creativity at such profound levels.

I want to be a professional designer and have taken the first steps to turning that
into reality. I feel the need to develop myself in this subject as I share no equal
amount of work or thrill in any other subject.
