Running head: Lab Report Microbes All Around Us

Lab Report
Introduction:
At this present time in Microbiology we are learning about bacteria. In this specific lab
we collected small specimens of bacteria from various objects (toilet seats, computer keyboards,
door handles, etc. We placed the different bacteria specimen in a divided nutrient agar plate, this
was done so that at a later date we could observe the changes in the bacteria. This experiment
was done so that we could learn about the various kinds of bacteria and how they grow. Different
objects have different bacteria, different amounts of bacteria, and different growth rates of
bacteria.
Materials:
1. We divided 3 nutrient agar plate into quarters.
2. We labeled the back of the plates with the objects we were going to obtain bacteria
from.
3. Two of us walked around campus and with sterile swabs and swabbed four different
objects (toilet seat, computer keyboard, microwave handle, and the door handle).
4. When done swabbing the objects we streaked the labeled plate with the bacteria
specimen.
5. All of us swabbed parts of our body with the sterile swabs.
6. We streaked the labeled plate with our bacteria specimen.
7. We put the plates in the cooler where they would remain for 7 days.

After 7 days we took the plates out to observe any changes and there were changes in
some of the bacteria specimens. With the objects we choose around campus surprisingly there
was not as much of change as we anticipated. However with the bacteria from our body parts
there was a noticeable change with three out of the five of us. Three of us swabbed our mouths
and the other two swabbed their under armpits. I noticed a lot of bacteria from my swab which
was taken from the inside of my lip that was disgusting.
Discussion:
My interpretation of what I found was that there is more bacteria on our body then on the
objects we swabbed. I was surprised by this, however I was not surprised about how much
bacteria was on our body. Im not surprised about the amount of bacteria on our body because we
come in contact with so much bacteria throughout the day. We touch things, we put things in our
mouth, we sweat and toxins come out of our pores. I was very surprised about the objects (toilet
seat, computer keyboard, microwave handle, and the door handle) we swabbed having little
bacteria. I dont know if those objects had been cleaned previously to us swabbing them but there
was not a lot of bacteria present on the objects.

Conclusion:
If I were to do this experiment over again, I would have verified with the custodian about
what time they clean the campus. I would do this so that I can get samples of my objects of

choice before they were wiped down with cleaning products. This the only difference I would
make with this experiment.
