Second Chances
A large old clapboard house in the middle of St. Johns,
Newfoundland, is home to 16 people trying to make a new life for
themselves. Some have come out of prison, some have just left
rehab, others are recovering from mental illness, but all are still
fragile and need support for their next steps.
Emmanuel House is a residential program of Stellas Circle, a
United Church outreach ministry. Emmanuel House offers a home
to adults who need a safe place for four months while they
address their social and emotional challenges. Theres supportive
counseling, help with going back to school, some skills training,
social fun, music, a chance to make new friends, nutritious meals,
and follow-up services to help people transition back to the
community.
We live with people as they live with us, so we get to know them
in a different way than if we just worked with them an hour a
week, explains Susan Pye, Emmanuel Houses program
coordinator. Being able to see peoples strengths, resilience,
talents, and skillsthat feeds our staff. It gives us hope and
encouragement when we see that people can grow, that people
blossom and flourish. And thats just amazing and such a privilege
to see.
And for people like Kyle, who is just 27 and learning to live without
alcohol, what difference has being at Emmanuel House made for
him? My life was a mess, and I might not even be here now, but
now I get a chance to start over and Im really pumped about that.
Our gifts for Mission and Service mean second chances for
people. Thank you, and please lets continue to give generously.
Mighty and tender God, our gifts to M&S help your church to
do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with you.
