CT Observation One Reflection
For my first observation as a level three intern, I was able to perform a lesson on
introducing time to my third grade class while being observed by my collaborating teacher. I
was pleased with the planning and organization of this lesson and was very excited to teach it to
the students. My CT offered me guidance in planning which allowed me to deliver an effective
lesson to the students.
I was pleased to find that the majority of this lesson went as planned. I did find that we began to
run out of time near the end of the lesson, which seems to be a regular occurrence with this
group. Keeping track of the flow of the lesson is something I am working on and something I
have found to be somewhat challenging, particularly with this group of largely ESE students. I
am going to keep that in mind and use this knowledge to help inform my future lessons.
Though our time seems to always be constrained, I did feel as though my methods of delivery
and strategies worked very well for this lesson. The talking chips, the turn-and-talk, the class
discussion, the moving about the room to show which answer the students got all helped to
create an effective and engaging lesson. The students seem to really enjoy the talking chips and
do a great job practicing their verbal and listening skills. I enjoy having the students move about
the room to show the answers they got and they do so with respect for others and for the
procedures.
When reflecting on the lesson, I feel as though I was able to reach all levels of students. I do
wish that I was able to focus more on one student who requires a Forte assistive technology
device to depict her answers, though my differentiation of questions helped me to reach her
verbally. She, and mostly all students, were able to effectively use the mathematics vocabulary
and showed mastery of the concepts throughout the lesson. The use of real world examples
fostered this mastery as well, as it does with most subject areas.
Upon post-conferencing with my CT, I found that I was effective and successful in my lesson.
Her feedback allowed me to see that I reached my higher and lower level students and that I was
able to prompt good discussion was different types of questions: lower thinking and higher order.
I used what I know about my students to inform instruction and the students can tell they are
respected and understood during my lessons.
I will surely use this feedback to guide my instruction and form future lessons. The students
seemed to really enjoy our activities and were able to show mastery of the material, which makes
me feel successful. I look forward to incorporating many of the ideas/ activities from this time
lesson into my future lessons. One goal I have for future lessons is to also incorporate centers to
assist student learning. I plan to collaborate with my co-teacher on doing so in the future.
