Objective(s): As a group, make a Mat Man
After completing the lesson, the students will be able to use the vocabulary of shapes to
describe Mat Man.
Standards: ELA.2.7 Actively attend to things that an adult is showing.
ELA.2.10 Anticipate actions, sounds, or phrases from a predictable story.
ELA.3.17 Name actions from pictures or a story.
Materials: Two large half circle shapes for the head, one small half circle for the mouth,
foam rectangle body, six inch sticks for arms and legs, three inch sticks for feet
(provided by Handwriting without Tears). Two pom poms for eyes, bottle cap for a nose,
two cut out hands for hands.
The Mat Man song, small white boards and dry erase markers.
Procedures: (list what the teacher and children will be doing):
First, we will have everyone sit in a circle, and then we will pass out Mat Man body
parts, making sure each child has at least one part he or she is responsible for. We will
sing along with the song, placing our body parts, as needed, to make our Mat Man.
Second we will use dry erase markers and a white board and again follow along with the
song, drawing the body parts as stated in the song. In both cases, when the song mentions
a body part, we will point out that we also have that part. An example: The song says,
Mat man has one nose and we point to our own noses.
