3rd Grade Reading Lesson Plan

Goal of Unit:
The goal of this unit is for students to learn how to identify the
theme/moral of a story
Standards:

RL.3.2: Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from


diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and
explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text.
R3.A.2.1.1: Identify and interpret the meaning of multiple-meaning
words used in text
RL.3.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding,

referring to the text


Objectives:
Students will be able to identify the theme/moral of a story
Students will be able to use quotation marks correctly
Students will be able to use and define vocabulary words
Materials:
Spelling composition book
Journeys book
Writing page
Theme activity page
Vocabulary worksheet
Quotation mark response sheet
Board game
Leveled readers vocabulary book
Vocabulary cards
Post-it notes
Smart board
Prerequisites:
Use context clues to define vocabulary words
Use retelling prompts to retell the story
Essential Questions:
What is the moral of a story?
What details help you know that is the moral?
Procedures:

Opener/Anticipatory Set:
Day 1
Teacher will give the students a spelling pre-test
Teacher will show the students a video about quotation marks
Lesson:
Teacher will give students a worksheet on quotation marks
Teacher will give students post-it cards with the vocabulary words on

them
Students will work in pairs to figure out what the word means, as well

as 2 sentences with the words in them


Students will share their definition of the word, as well as their

sentences with the class


Teacher will introduce the text (Tops and Bottoms)
Students will begin to read-to-self
Closing:
Teacher will ask essential questions after reading
Day 2
Opener/Anticipatory Set:
Teacher will give a warm up activity on quotation marks
Lesson:
Teacher will explain to students that they will be working in groups to
complete the text
Mrs. Smith will take the pink group (below level)
Miss O will take the green group (on level)
The purple group will work independently with an activity (above level)
Closing:
Students will come together as a whole
Teacher will ask students essential questions from the text
Students will complete worksheet with partners
Day 3
Opener/Anticipatory Set:
Teacher will distribute vocabulary cards to partners
Students will review the definition and the think about it section
Teacher will rotate the cards after five minutes
Students will discuss their findings
Lesson:
Teacher will explain to the students that they will be working in groups
to read the leveled readers book

Miss O will take the pink group (below level) and read together, while

asking questions along the way


The green and purple group will partner read
Closing:
Students will come together as a whole
Students will work independently to complete the inference map that
goes with the story
Students will write a paragraph about the story

Day 4
Opener/Anticipatory Set:
Teacher will introduce the centers for the day
Lesson:
Miss O will be conducting the writing center
Mrs. Smith will be conducting a theme activity in her center
In the third center, the students will be working independently on the
carpet to do a board game, vocabulary readers book with activity, and
a quotation marks worksheet
Students will rotate centers every thirty minutes
Closing:
Class will come together as a whole to turn in finished assignments
Day 5
Opener/Anticipatory Set:
Teacher will do a theme activity on the smart board
Teacher will review the centers with students
Lesson:
Students will go to their appropriate centers
Miss O will be working in the writing center
Mrs. Smith will be working with the theme activity center
The other students will be working on the carpet doing a board game,
quotation marks worksheet, and a vocabulary readers book with
activity
Students will rotate centers every thirty minutes
Closing:
Students will come together as a whole to hand in their finished
assignments
Day 6
Opener/Anticipatory Set:

Teacher will do a quick review about quotation marks and theme


Lesson:
Teacher will give students a test based on the text
Students will complete the test
Closing:
Students will grade their test with help from the teacher
