ECE 124 HOMEWORK #2

DR. DANIEL BUKOFZER, Spring 2015

1.

Use the system equation to prove that the system is linear.

2. Determine whether the systems defined by the equations below for b), d) and f) only, have
memory or if they are memoryless. State reasons for the answer given -- a proof would be
even better.

For the above DT system descriptions, let T 1 .

3. Determine whether the systems described in Prob. 2, parts a), c), and e) are (or are not)
time invariant. State reasons for the answer given -- a proof would be even better.
4. Determine whether or not the systems described below are (or are not) causal. State
reasons for the answer given -- a proof would be even better. Here also, for convenience, let
T 1.

5. Obtain the convolution of the sequences specified and for each case use MATLAB to plot
the result obtained over sufficient values of n in order to be able to clearly see the resulting
n
signal, a) x1[n] rect5 [n] and x2 [n] sgn[n] , b) x1[n] 2 u[ n] and x2 [n] cos( 0 n)u[n] ,
c) x1[n] 2 [n 1] 4 [n] 5 [ n 1] and x2 [n] 3 [n 2] [n 1] 3 [n] .
6. Obtain the convolution of the signals specified and for each case use MATLAB to plot the
result obtained over a large enough range of values of time in order to be able to clearly see
|t |
the resulting signal, a) x1 (t ) tri (t ) and x2 (t ) e , b) x1 (t ) rect ((t 1) / 2) and
x2 (t ) rect ((t 1) / 2) ,

c)

x1 (t ) 4 (t 2.5) 4 (t 0.25) 2 (t 0.5)

and

x2 (t ) 3e 2t u (t 3) .
