Novice Teacher-Final Summative Report:
The format of this report is specifically intended for those probationary first year teachers who are clearly
meeting standard according to the principal and the Consulting Teacher. This report format is not to be
used as a model for the principals Final Evaluation. The data included in this or any report written by
the Consulting Teacher may not be used in the principals Final Evaluation.

Directions: Observer completes a narrative description based on the Teacher Evaluation Performance
Standards. The description includes classroom observations, and any other documents collected by the
observer.
Background Information:
Ms. Scherer is a first year probationary teacher assigned to Briggs Chaney Middle School in Silver Spring,
MD where she teaches five sections of Advanced English eight. Briggs Chaney Middle School follows a 1-7
bell schedule Monday through Friday. Ms. Scherer holds a Bachelors Degree in English and Chinese from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Masters Degree in teaching secondary English from
Brown University. Ms. Scherer is certified to teach secondary English to students in grades six through
twelve.

Performance Standard I: Teachers are committed to students and their learning.

Ms. Scherer consistently delivers lessons that challenge students without overwhelming them. As a result,
students are exposed to instructional activities in ways that promote participation and foster their engagement
in the learning process.

Ms. Scherer successfully teaches students strategies for exerting effective effort. As a result,
students demonstrate increased independence and persistence to learning tasks after receiving teacher
cues to the strategies.
Ms. Scherer is patient and professional with her students, and communicates respect for them
as individuals at all times. As a result, the students are respectful and disruptions to learning are
minimized.
Ms. Scherer communicates the expectation that students follow through on completing their
work. As a result, students receive the message that the teacher cares about their success.

Ms. Scherer routinely provides opportunities for individual support to students. As a result, students
receive the message that they are individually valued members of the learning community.

Ms. Scherer prepares her students for all class activities by framing her lesson, explaining her
agenda, and reviewing where the students are in a unit of study. As a result, students understand
the context of the days lesson, and are able to anticipate and be better prepared for class activities.
Ms. Scherer clearly communicates the expectation that all students participate in the lesson. As
a result, the students receive the message that they are all expected to participate in the entire lesson

Performance Standard II: Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to
students.

Ms. Scherer appropriately uses explanatory devices to help students build an understanding of
the concepts. As a result, students had visual aids to help clarify the information being learned.
Ms. Scherer effectively plans activities that are directly aligned with the objective. As a result,
students receive instruction that is comprehensive and focused on student mastery of the curricular
goals.
Ms. Scherer effectively plans learning activities that are appropriately matched to curricular
and individualized goals. As a result, students receive information that is appropriate for their
academic level and provides exposure to the MCPS curriculum.
Ms. Scherer uses questioning and modeling to make thinking visible. As a result, students are
able to share and extend their understanding throughout lessons.
Ms. Scherer communicates the criteria for success for assignments throughout instruction. As a
result, students are able to focus their efforts on the criteria needed for a complete response.
Ms. Scherer shows evidence of knowledge and adherence to grade level curriculum. As a result,
students are able to show mastery of grade level curriculum and academic growth.
Ms. Scherer provides explicit instructions so that students are very clear on what they are
expected to learn and do during class. As a result, students are clearly able to demonstrate mastery
of the objectives.

Performance Standard III: Teachers are responsible for establishing and managing student learning
in a positive learning environment.

Ms. Scherer clearly communicates behavior expectations and supports consistent on-task
behavior. As a result, students are focused on instruction and downtime is minimized.

Ms. Scherer uses a variety of attention moves to prevent unwanted behaviors and maximize
student learning time. As a result, students instructional time is maximized because they are
provided multiple strategies to help them regain focus and attend to instruction.
Ms. Scherer is kind and patient but firm and directive when addressing examples of repeated
minor misconduct. As a result, students are less resistant to behavioral corrections.
Ms. Scherer maximizes engaged student learning time by appropriately pacing her lessons,
making smooth transitions and having materials ready and organized. As a result, students are
focused on instruction for the length of the learning experience.
Ms. Scherer skillfully implements routines and procedures for her class to maximize time on
task. As a result, students are able to focus their attention on their work expectations.
Ms. Scherer uses time cues consistently during class to alert students to time remaining during
activities in class. As a result, students are more engaged and productive.

Performance Standard IV: Teachers continually assess student progress, analyze the results, and
adapt instruction to improve student achievement.

Ms. Scherer consistently observes student work in order to provide specific feedback. As a
result, students instructional needs are met during the lesson. Ms. Scherer consistently interacts with
students to determine their understanding and modifies her approach to meet their needs.
Ms. Scherer has frequent checks for understanding during the lesson. As a result, students have
numerous opportunities during class to get clarification and to practice their mastery of the
objectives. They can ask questions of the teacher and know it is ok to ask for help.
Ms. Scherer implements a variety formal and informal assessment formats to determine
student progress. Therefore, student understanding and progress are evidenced by multiple sources
of data. .
Ms. Scherer effectively develops and communicates clear criteria for success in student work.
As a result, students know what is expected of them and are able to successfully complete the
assignment.
Ms. Scherer provides timely and appropriate feedback to respond to student answers. As a
result, students are able to recognize where they need to adjust their responses in order to show
mastery of lesson objectives.
Ms. Scherer collects and maintains accurate student records. As a result, students are exposed to
curriculum appropriate to their learning.

Performance Standard V: Teachers are committed to continuous improvement and professional


development.
Ms. Scherer reflects on her own strengths and weaknesses and modifies her instruction accordingly. Ms.
Scherer initiates reflective conversations with her colleagues and her Consulting Teacher. She meets with her
colleagues on a regular basis to plan lessons, range find, and develop instructional materials. Ms. Scherer
reflects on student work with colleagues to analyze and adjust instruction. Ms. Scherer participated in
independent professional development activities including a visit to the National Art Gallery in Washington,
DC to gain insight and select appropriate pieces of artwork to be used as visual texts in her classroom. She
also used the New York Times to closely follow the events in the Ukraine to help her students connect to
events in a class novel. As a result of her continuous improvement and professional development, Ms.
Scherer continues to grow in her ability to consistently use best teaching practices.

Performance Standard VI: Teachers exhibit a high degree of professionalism.


Ms. Scherer uses practices and procedures that align with MCPS vision, goals, policies, and regulations. Ms.
Scherer represents the school well when dealing with students, parents, and other members of the
community. Ms. Scherer attends and actively participates in all scheduled conferences and meetings with her
Consulting Teacher, responds to emails, and provides requested information in a timely manner. Ms. Scherer
interacts in a respectful manner with all members of the school community. She establishes classroom
standards and policies that are consistent with school-wide policies. Ms. Scherer participates in required
staff, team, department (PLC) and parent conference meetings. Ms. Scherer attended Back to School Night
and Fame, the school musical. Ms. Scherer developed materials and trained her staff on argumentative
writing during a staff meeting. As a result of Ms. Scherer's high degree of professionalism and participation
in school events, students have access to a teacher highly committed to her students and the school
community.

Ms. Scherer will continue to implement consistent routines and procedures to maximize time on task.
Ms. Teacher will continue to routinely consult with colleagues when planning for instruction.
