Topic/Concept/Skill:
Founding of California and Utah and how they marked the end of Manifest Destiny. In particular
the Gold Rush for California and the Mormons for Utah.
Related Standard:
8.1.18 Describe the causes, courses, challenges, compromises, and consequences associated
with westward expansion, including the concept of Manifest Destiny.
Background:
Understand information being given
Main Objective of Instruction:
In order to understand the context of the founding of California and Utah in the implied end of
Manifest Destiny, TSWBAT given the proper vocabulary, reading of the section, and a minilecture
through a handout over the section answered by the end of the class period.
Teacher Materials/Resources:
Computer, PowerPoint, Projector Screen, Chapter 12 Section 4 Reading Worksheet
Student Materials:
Textbook, pen or pencil, paper, Chapter 12 Section 4 Reading Worksheet (given by teacher)
Anticipatory Set (Introductory Approach):
I will begin class with an introductory PowerPoint with pictures detailing the main vocabulary
words with images and I will vocally describe the vocabulary word that goes with said images.
(LS-Visual & Auditory) This is mainly to draw their attention by showing them real life images of
what they will be reading about in the text.
Instructional Procedures (Whole Group):
1) Greet students as they come into class and take attendance.
2) Introduce that today we are going to be covering the founding of California and Utah. In
particular how the Gold Rush and Mormons played the key role in the settlement of these states.
Begin giving the introductory PowerPoint. (When presenting the PowerPoint use the Computer to

put it on screen and put the Projector Screen down so the whole class can see it.) (LS-Visual and
Auditory) Answer any questions students have over the PowerPoint that was shown. (10min)
3) Ask the following questions to ensure everyone got the key vocab words from the PowerPoint.
What was the Gold Rush? Who were the 49ers? What was a Boomtown? In what period of
time did the Mormons form? When did the Mormons move to Utah? Pick students who
volunteer to answer questions. If wrong first make sure to see if any other students knows
answer and if not then explain why their answer is wrong and give the correct answer. (5 min)
4) Have students take out their textbook and turn to Chapter 12 Section 4. Pass out the Chapter
12 Section 4 Reading Worksheet and state the instructions on the worksheet out loud to the
class. Answer any questions students have on the instructions for the worksheet. Instruct
students that they are to read Chapter 12 Section 4 individually and answer the questions on the
Chapter 12 Section 4 Reading Worksheet (LS-Intrapersonal). Give students 15 min to read and fill
out the worksheet (Activity Learning Links). (20 min)
5) When 20 min is up give the students 5 min to pair up with one another and compare their
answers to one another to see I they both got the correct answer (LS-Interpersonal)(Activity
Think-Pair-Share). Once this is complete go over the questions (on the Chapter 12 Section 4
Reading Worksheet) out loud with the entire class and have them answer the questions. If the
students get a question wrong explain how their answer is wrong and proceed to give them the
correct answer (Activity I Have the Question, Who Has the Answer). (15 min)
6) For the last 5 min of class inform students how with the settlement of California and Utah was
in many Americans view the accomplishment of Manifest Destiny being achieved due to America
having settled the country as far west as they could. (5 min)
7) Perform assessment where class writes a one paragraph response on their own piece of paper
to the following question With the settlement of California and Utah many believe that the goal
of Manifest Destiny was achieved. In your own words do you believe that this was true or not?
Make sure before class is over to inform students of an exam over Chapter 12 on Friday
3/6/2015(5 min)
8) In the event that there is extra time or any of the procedures above gets finished prematurely
engage the students on their thoughts on what they think could be the modern day Manifest
Destiny. (5-10 min)
Provisions for Individual and/or Group Differences:

Closure:
Close by giving a minilecture on how the settlement of California and Utah in many ways was
viewed as the achievement of the American goal of Manifest Destiny. Thus it marked the end of
American westward expansion due to having reach the furthest west that Americans could go on
land.
Evaluation of Learning:
I will have students write a one paragraph response on their own piece of paper to the question
With the settlement of California and Utah many believe that the goal of Manifest Destiny was
achieved. In your own words do you believe that this was true or not? (5 min)
Independent Practice:
Study for exam that will be given on 3/6/2015 over Chapter 12
