ABSTRACT
A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON PATIENTS WITH HEMATEMESIS MELENA
AT ULIN GENERAL HOSPITAL BANJARMASIN IN 2010

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding is bleeding occurred from proximal
gastrointestinal tract to the Treitz ligament. The most classic symptoms was hema
temesis than followed by melena. Hematemesis is vomiting of blood and melena is
black stool. Hematemesis and melena are emergency conditions requiring immedi
ate intensive medical management because of the high mortality rate. The aims of
this study were to find out age, gender, etiology, and prognosis of patients with he
matemesis melena. It was an observational study with cross sectional approach.
The data showed that from 47 patients with hematemesis melena, most of them we
re 60 years of age. The youngest one was 14 years old and the oldest one was 8
5 years old. Thirty two patients were male (68.09%) and 15 were women (31.91
%). The etiology were esophageal varices (23.88%), peptic ulcer (22.39%), liver
cirrhosis (14.93%), erosive gastritis (14.93%), gastric ulcer (5.97%), gastritis (4.
48%), duodenal ulcer (2.99%), gastropathy (2.99%), erosive duodenitis (1.49%),
and duodenitis (1.49%). 40.43% of patients have recovered and 10.64% die. We
can conclude the most of patients are 60 years of age (27.66%), the majority of
patients are male (68.09%), the most common etiology is esophageal varices (24.
24%), the most of the patients are recovered (40.43%).
