AMAIZING GRACE (Sublime Gracia)

Himno Cristiano de libertad de fines del s. XVIII

La pelcula obtiene su nombre del himno cristiano compuesto por John Newton en 1772, quien
fuera capitn de barcos que comerciaban esclavos africanos, durante muchos aos; se cuenta
que durante una tormenta cuando navegaba, se convirti a la religin, se arrepinti del
sufrimiento causado a miles de personas y se hizo clrigo. William Wilberforce le conoci y qued
impactado por l.
Se cumplieron ya ms de 200 aos de la votacin que puso fuera de la legalidad el trfico de
seres humanos en los dominios britnicos. El 23 de febrero de 1807, por 283 votos a favor y 16
en contra, la Cmara de los Comunes aprob la llamada Slave Trade Act, que recibi el
asentimiento real el 25 de marzo de ese mismo ao.
Se cuenta que an tuvo tiempo de ver cmo el Acta de Abolicin de la Esclavitud fue aprobada
por la Cmara de los Comunes el 26 de julio de 1833; y tres das despus muri; un mes
despus, ese Acta fue ratificada, y los esclavos fueron por fin libres en el Imperio Britnico.
El himno ha sido muy popular en la comunidad cristiana mundial y se considera reflejo de la
gracia divina descrita en el libro primero de Crnicas 17: 16; en ese pasaje bblico, David y su
familia se maravillan por haber sido escogidos por Dios para reinar sobre Israel; la lectura inspir
a Newton un sermn que titul: Faiths review and expectacin (Revisin de la fe y esperanza),
que pronunci en el ao nuevo de 1773, y que se supone la base de la letra del cntico. Newton
tambin fue conocido como defensor de la libertad y los derechos humanos tanto por cristianos
como por seculares.
