Hydropowerpotentially
inPakistan
_____________________________________________________
Hydropower i

s power derived from the

energy of falling water and running water,
which may be harnessed for useful purposes.
It is safe to say that hydropower is a great
resource for electricity to light up many cities.
The question is, what country has not used
hydropower as a resource for electricity yet?
There is one country that has had potential for
hydropower for a very long time, and recently
started doing something about it. That country
is Pakistan, it has 307,374 mi of land and
touches the Arabian Sea.

Pakistan has an identified hydropower

potential of 60,000 MW, of which 40,000 MW
is located on Indus Cascade starting from
Skardu to Tarbela, 1
If they gain this potential,
most likely, Pakistan will be saving more U.S.
dollars than they were before. Pakistan
especially needs to save money in order for
them to jump out of the poverty hole they are
in, but thats another topic that can be saved
for later.
Another question to consider about is,
what is Pakistan doing
now
to get themselves
hydropower? Recently, The Pakistani
government has committed to spending
US$51 million in an effort to expedite
completion of the 1,410-MW Tarbela 4

hydropower plant by seven months. 2

This is
good progress for them to take, taking it slow
but able to jump up and improve their
potential. Also,
the completion of the
hydropower plant is that its expected to
push the completion date up to June 2017. A
country recently has actually stood up and
confronted Pakistan and offered to help them,
that country was Kuwait. A country recently
has actually stood up and confronted Pakistan
and offered to help them, that country was

Kuwait. A deal signed in Islamabad will see

the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic
Development (KFAED) provide an additional
US$32 million for Pakistan's 969-MW Neelum
Jhelum hydropower plant. 3For those who
dont know the location
of Kuwait, it is a country
in Western Asia and it is
a very small country.
This is not the first time
Kuwait
has
helped
Pakistan fund their
Hydropower plant. The
agreement adds to a previous $42 million loan
from KFAED and gives Pakistan's Water and
Power Development Authority (WAPDA) a
total of about $1.1 billion in funding from a
number of foreign sources. 3
Pakistan has supporters about this
situation, and shows to believe that they are
trying to resolve this issue. They have an
estimated time of when the power plant will
be done, but the main question is, will it
actually be done by that time? The people will
have to wait and find out for themselves.

their terrorism, while Pakistan is actually

trying to get terrorism to an all time low.
The common threat of violent
extremism may serve as a catalyst for
improved cooperation between the two
countries, and we have already seen progress
in
the
Afghanistan-Pakistan
military
relationship. Pakistan, just like Afghanistan
has suffered greatly at the hands of terrorists
and violent extremists, 3
This shows that
Pakistan
has
nothing
to do with
(Pakistan military taking an action)
communicating with India, theyre actually
communicating with Afghanistan about the
situation. Not ever did Pakistan want any
communication about their situation at the
moment. India had called off foreign
secretary-level talks at the eleventh hour after
