UT Ss Univesity f Teal. Sydey 49150 — Prestressed Concrete Design ‘Autumn 2015 - Assignment No. 1 Question 1 Due Date: Friday 27" March ‘The figure below shows the elevation of a simply supported post-tensioned concrete beam of rectangular cross-section, 1200 deep x 500 wide. The maximum eccentricity of the tendon profile ie limited to 480 mm ~ this should be at midspan where the moment is a maximum The weight density of the concrete is 25 kN/m®. The superimposed loads are: Dead, UDL We = 3.0 kN/m and point load at each third point Pe Live, UDL Wa = 20 KN/m_ and point load at each third point Pa a) By considering equilibrium on the cut section at midspan, determine the effective presistst force, Pe, requited to carry the service load combination G + 0.25Q. Assume that this effective prestress force is constant along the entire cable profile. b) For this calculated prestress force, Pe, assumed total losses of 30% and a maximum sess at jacking of Gjm = 0.85fp, what is the minimum number of 12.7 mm diameter 7 wire superstrands required? ©) Sketch reasonably accurately, on the diagram below, an appropriate tendon profile 10 exactly balance the superimposed service load combination G + 0.25Q. Explain the basis for determining each part of your cable profile. €) Determine the details of your proposed tendon profile. In particular, calculate the angle © the horizontal of the tendon profile at the anchorages (84 and Qc) and the eccentricity of the tendon profile at the third points (@g and ep). I ean think of two or three ways for calculating uch of these results, Just for the hell of it, how about the angles just either side of the third points, Op and Op, , a8 a big hint, there should be a kink at these two positions e P Ww te _ _-------- eyo ee eee S de 400" XS A 8 ce . 40% 4-0 AO _ 49150 — Prestressed Concrete Design Autumn 2015 - Assignment No. 1 Question 2 ‘A post-tensioned rectangular concrete beam is to span 20 m, simply supported, and is to carry a superimposed UDL ~ the details are shown in the sketch below. The prestressing tendon consists of eighteen (18) 12.7 mm diameter superstrands with an effective prestress level of Gpe = 1100 MPa after losses. The concrete will have a characteristic compressive strength, f,’ = 40 MPa and a strength at transfer of fej) = 22 MPa. The maximum stress in the tendon during jacking is 0.85 fp. With a parabolic tendon profile, the eccentricity of the tendon from the centroidal axis at mid-span is 400 mm. The duct diameter is da = 95 mm. ‘The nominal superimposed loads, as UDLS, are: Dead, We = 2.1 kN/m and Live, Wa = 24.0 kNim. a) I determined the tendon profile and level of effective prestress, Ope = 1100 MPa, to load balance the dead load, G. Please show that this decision of mine is correct (or otherwise!) b) At midspan for the strength limit state, is this cross-section adequate in bending? Your calculation of (Myo is to be done from first principles, assuming the ERSB. As part of your calculation, what is the total strain in the prestressing tendon at midspan, Epu? ‘As part of your calculation, what is the effective depth at midspan, d? ©) Thave decided that the critical cross-section for transverse shear is 1.20 m from the support What is the value of $Vue for flexure-shear cracking at this position? The eccentricity of the tendon from the centroidal axis is 90 mm at this position. 4) At midspan, I have determined that strength at transfer is adequate. Please show that this decision of mine is correct (or otherwise!), in accordance with the requirements of AS3600.
