Authors note: This paper was easy to do after I saw some of the others as
well as the comments given to me. This helped me organize my paper better and
infographic. In todays society cell phones are things people cannot go without sometimes.
So I thought picking this topic would be perfect and easy to gather up information and
research.
My topic is over cell phones. This caught my interest because of the troubles they
have caused people. My main question for cell phones is why do people think they are so
distracting and taking over for the most part. The way I looked at things was that people
are saying that they are mini-computers that have access to almost anything you can look
up. After looking up many info graphics there were three that popped out to me the most.
They talked about how cell phones are distractions, but also how they are under reported,
health risks, and one showed statistics of the use of cell phones. This got me thinking that
I would get information from resourceful cites and gather information on those three
things as well.
People in todays world have said that cell phones are a distraction. I agree but
also disagree because of two things. You can own a cell phone and use it properly and
you can own one and not text or anything while driving. Why do I agree? I agree because
many teenagers are the real cause for people saying that cell phones are a distraction. For
example teens in highschool bring their phones to class and dont listen to what the
teacher has to say, but this isnt just high school students also college because some
professors are not as strict as others. Another one is based on any person texting, calling,

looking at Facebook etc. this all being done while operating a motor vehicle. This is a bad
thing all around the world. As I did research on how cell phones are distracting, I found
that many crashes that involve the use of a cell phone are under- reported. In 2011 a teen
was talking on his cell phone when he hit two friends walking across the street, the
person on the other line heard it and asked what that was, the teen said he thought he hit
a water cooler and kept driving. Chelsea, 19 died four days later due to being brain dead.
Her was seriously injured. (Crashes Involving) The report dealing with this crash did
not have anywhere on there caused from cell phone use. I feel that if police start putting
that in the reports, people are going to start seeing the real results and think maybe they
should stop because of how high the percentage is for one being on their phone while
driving.
Secondly I thought searching how cell phones are a health risk would also be a
good point because many people say that phone radiation can cause cancer. I did my
research and found that this is not true. According to the FDA cell phones emit low
levels of radiofrequency energy. (Health Issues) Being around an area that gives off high
frequency would make the tissues in your body heat up. This being said the low levels
caused from cell phone use will not make tissues heat up. Radiofrequency energy is a
type of non-ionizing radiation. (Health Issues)
The third point I wanted to search was the use of cell phones between adults
compared to teens, females compared to males, and lastly the data usage between them.
Pewinterent.com gave me a great deal of stats to compare. What caught my eye about this
is that 67% of cell phone owners find themselves checking their phones even when they
dont notice it ringing or vibrating. (3) This is true I fin myself at times looking up

things even though my device has not gone off. Another thing that caught my eye on this
website is dealing with people that get spam or text messages. Now telemarketers are
getting ahold of cell phone numbers and contacting you through there. Now on to cell
Internet access otherwise known as data. As of May 2013 63% of adult cell owners use
their phones to go online. About 34% go online using their phones instead of a
computer. (Mobile Technology) Now onto adults that own smartphones which is
about 90% out of that percent there are 93 males and 88 females.(Mobile Technology)
This comes to show that men have more phones, which would then result in them having
more usage for data. Which I could see because males get on to watch games as well as
surf the web. Females get on to check Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram etc.
Researching over cell phones answered many of my unanswered questions. This
helped me understand a lot more why people think they are a distraction. Another thing is
it helped with the statistics of how many adults have cell phones, which they use almost
everyday debating whether its a male or female. Many people in todays society have let
phones take over their lives. This is ok, just as long as we the people using the device,
know when the appropriate time to use it is.
