IBD of unknown etiology involving
the GI tract.
Peak occurrence between ages 15
and 35, but onset my occur at any
age.
Departed of :
1. UC = Ulcerative Colitis
2. CD = Crohns Disease

Ulcerative Colitis

PATHOLOGY :
1. Colonic mucosal inflammation :
rectum almost always involved with
inflammation extending continuously
(no skip areas).
2. Proximally for a variable extent :
histologic features include
epithelial damage, inflammation,
crypt abscesses, loss of goblet cells.

Ulcerative Colitis
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
1. Bloody diarrhea
2. Mucus
3. Fever
4. Abdominal pain
5. Tenesmus
6. Weight loss
7. Spectrum of severity (majority of cases
are mild,
limited to rectosigmoid)
8. In severe case : Dehydration, Anemia,
Hypokalemia, Hypoalbuminemia

Ulcerative Colitis
COMPLICATIONS
1. Toxic megacolon
2. Colonic perforation : cancer risk
related
to extend and duration of
colitis;
preceded by dysplasia
(precancer)
3. Which may be detected on
surveillance colonoscopic biopsies

DIAGNOSIS
1. Sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy :
mucosal erythematous, granularity,
friability, exudate, hemorrhage,
ulcers, pseudopolyps (regenerating
mucosa).
2. Barium enema : loss of
haustrations, mucosal irregularity,
ulcerations
