Name of Lesson:

Recycled Robot

Subject

Art/Science

Grade

K-2/Whole Group

Rationale for lesson:

To help students understand that they can connect this lesson to previous
knowledge of shapes
Students will understand that we can reuse some things to help the earth
To create art with different objects

Learning outcomes:

Students will be able to be creative using materials they have collected to

make a robot
To enhance students creative and fine motor skills
Develop visual and auditory perception to create unique art
Students will work together to create art
Students can separate items by shape and/or size

Assessment of student outcomes:

This is a cooperative learning activity and can be assessed trough the

completion of the robot project.
Class discussion can also be monitored to see how students react and see
their comprehension
Ask students, what are robots? What are they made of? Have you ever seen a
robot up close? What do they do? What shapes do you see in a robot? How do
they move?
Discuss things that they might have inn their house that is like a robot and
can help make life easier, dishwasher, vacuum, etc.

Materials needed:

Cardboard
Junk
Hot glue gun and glue
Containers to separate things by shape or size

Lesson/Activity Presentation:
Anticipatory Set:

Start with attention getter; Classity Class and wait for student response.
Explain that we are going to look at things we have collected and try to
match them to shapes that we know. Tell them we are going to watch a video
clip about recycling and talk about why we recycle. We are also going to see
how we can make our very own Recycle Robot from the things we have
brought in. End with showing a clip of robots

Teaching Procedures:

Prep ahead of time: cut large sheets of cardboard into rectangles.

Put students at table and show them the junk you have collected
Talk to them about their size, shape and color
Have students sort by size or shape into the bins
Allow students time to explore the junk
Ask if they have ideas on how you can use the junk to create something new
Help students put together robots in the way they want but do not take over.
Sit back and watch their imaginations take over

Guided and Independent Practice:

Allow students to voice what they want for their own robot but also allow
them to make suggestions to a peer or ask for help.
Allow students plenty of time to create what they want
Help when asked

Closure:

Ask if their robot turned out like they expected.

What did they learn about robots
What did they learn about recycling

Differentiated instruction:

More hands on for NR and XG

Technology:

Ipad and Smart Projector

Reflection:

This was ambitious and harder than I thought it would be for the kids. I knew
they would not fully understand the recycling part but they did ok. They did
very well with sorting and used their skills to create 5 shape bins. We had to
be more hands on then I wanted to be. I will revisit this lesson next year and
modify it to be more 2-D or even 1-D.
