you think is appropriate for the picture. Note that no inferences are needed'
ln other words, if something is not clear from the picture, do not assume it

Cause and effect questons look at either an evenrt or an action, and either the
reason for it happening (the cause), or the consequences which it has already had
or mght have in the future (effect). For this type of question, you may find it helpful
to listen for expressions such as because (of), due to, owing to, as a result of, and

(W) ln today's lecture, l d like to focus your attention

on cryptoEraphy', I know that this is something

that most of you may not be familiar with, but
chances are it is already used at some level within
your o\ryn business. Cryptography is, quite simply,
the art of secret communication. You may think
this sounds rathei'old fashioned, but it is in fact of
greater and greater relevance in the 21"'ceniury.
It used to be something used mainly for military
purposes and national security. But nowadays it
is imporlant for protecting the privacy of individuals.
I mean this in terms of online business transactions,

e-banking. and any time you need to transfer

personal information through a computer. We all
maintain large databases of customer details, of
our own transactions, and in fact everything is
stored in a computer somewhere. Strong
cryptography is required in order to guarantee
security every time a transaction is made online
in a world where e-commerce is becoming more
common. Using a crirptograph, which is, of course,
not viewable by the cornputer user, informaticn is

This section of the TOEIC6 typically checks the scope of your vocabulary
knowledge, along with your ability to make correct use of words and phrases.
When choosing the answer, you should pay close attention to grammatical
points such as parts of speech, tenses, agreement, positions of frequency
adverbs, etc. Note also that the words around the rnissing word can be
useful clues for the answer. Pay close attention to the type of word you are
asked to find. lf the question asks you to find a noun, Iook only for nouns;
disregard any verbs, adverbs, adjectives, etc. in the selection list.

Test-toking Tips

/
{
/

Determine whether the question is about vocabulary or about grammar.

ll it is a vocabulary question, think of the meaning of the whole sentence.
lf it is a Erammar question, determine the part of speech needed for the

blank by taking a close look at the surrounding elements.

,/

Remember that quite a lot of English words look and sound smilar,
sometimes even the same, even though the meaning is ditfereni.

Along with a cover letter, it is the first impression a prospective employee makes on
a potential employer. Therefore. it is imporlant that a rsum provide as much relevant
information as possible while remaining brief. A rsum should be no more than one

several pages r,rrhich, more often than not, don't even get a second glance.

least three-quarter inch margins on all
n rsum must be neatly printed, with
four sides. Use underlining, capital letters and asterisks'to hlghllght important
information. A rsum should be single-spaced with an extra line between blocks of
informatlon.

Begin a rsum with your name, address, and contact information (e.9., telephone
or fax numbers, email address). Do not include age, marital status, or other personal
oor career goal. Then comes
facts. Next, many rsums state the position sought
perhaps the most important part: a chronological outline of work experience-starting

sbackwards-including for each position

with the most recent job and working

brief description of relevant duties and skills used or acquired. Finally, include an outline
of your educational background from the most recent backwards. Make sure to list

MEMO

To:

All menrbers of the city Library sub-comrnittee and Library employees

From: Alex Farino, City Courncil Director of Public Services
Re: OrganizationalHierarchy
Date: September 12, 2005

Please take a look at the attached chart. As you know, the

Cis Library sub-committee

was set up to deal with tire day'-to-day running of the city library, and as an effort to
improve the overall efficiency of ths institution. At the inaugural meeting on August
20'n, the official chain of command, so to'speak, was establlshed. Howevei-, it sers
that the primary reason for the existence of the crmmittee has been misunderstood
by the majority of the members. I have been receiving indil, idual dccuments and
letters from most of the people named on the cl-;art. The u,hole purpose of rnaking
this chart was to prevent this from happening. All complaints ancj proLrlems regarding
the reference and multi-meda sections of the library should be reported by the
librarians irr charge to comnrittee rnembers 1 or 2. After discussioir, if they, are
unable to resolve the complaint, then they should take t tc lhe next level, in other
tt'crds, to the chairman of the Heference Section, tsrian Kingstor. Shor:!d he feel it
necessary, he rnay bring matters 10 rny attentcn; otherwse, he is authorized to tal.,e
action as he sees flt. lt is the same scenario lvith the adults' and children's lending
libraries: firsi approach committee menrbers 3 or 4, who vyrll then ap5:;-oach the
relevant chairperson if needed. Under no circumstances shoul<j anyone approach
me directly. I urge you to follow this protocol.

Dear Nancy,

rl

Thank you for qetting back tc me so quick[y. I haven't forgotten what we discussed,
and lwi[[be having a meetinq vvrth Bob Jones laterthis afternoon. Do you want me
to ask him if the budget can be i-aised to $35,000? We had set a l-rudget of $300,000,
but after going ihrough the Lrui[ding pta;rs with you and the architect, Ithink ihat it
is not going to Lre enough. ihave been going through the bocks, and ithink the firm
can manage it. iam pretty sure that, together, you and lcan come up lvith a pretty
persuasive package that we can take to the next leveI if Bob is unwiL[ing to discuss

it today. i krrow that he is the perscn I am supposed io consult first, but frank[y, he
[acks ihe power to make that kind of decision.
Let me know what yori think.

Dear Anita,

Well, I too have been looking at the figures, and I think that rnale u'e shorld ask for
$4oo,ooo. It is embarrassing to go u,ay over budget once a pro-iect has begun, so I
ouid rather ask for more before we begin and not have to cut corners later. I think it
is a waste of time goirrg over eve{thing with Bob, but I understand that this is the
procedure. Talk to hini so that he klows what is going on, but rake an appointment to taik
.been
interested
to Joseph Green, too. He is a lot more influeitial, and I knorv tirat he has
help

on our side. See if 'ou can
in this project from the start. It will definitely
get Rosemar-v Connors to come along, too-let's make a mini-presentation to them both.
If they both like our ideas, I think we will have no trouble getting rvhat vve want.
