The 5 Senses

1st Grade

Essential Question:
How do we use our five senses?
I. Sight
A. Students will go on an "eye opened" nature walk
B. The students will pick out 3 leaves and will be able to describe the shapes, sizes, and colors of
the leaves.
C. While on the nature walk, students will use an iPad or iPhone to take pictures of the leaves.
D. After observing the leaves through the iPad, students will draw what they see and put them on a
diagram.
2.

Touch
A. Students will use their sense of touch to feel the different types of beans in a bag.
B. Students will answer questions like can you tell what type of bean you are holding with your
eyes closed?
C. Students will use their smart notebook and write down what they find.
D. Students will watch a brain pop video on the sense of touch.

3.

Smell
A. Students will use their sense of smell to identify 5 different types of fruits.
B. Students will create their own picture on their iPad, and add spices to the picture.
C. Ask students what their nose is used for. What smells do they like? Dislike?
D. Students will use their smart notebook to write down the different smells that they discover.

4.

Taste
A. Students will use their sense of taste by doing a taste test.
B. Students will be trying different foods and will record what they taste on their smart notebook.
C. Students will make a diagram of their favorite foods and what they disliked as well.
D. Students will determine which foods are bitter, sweet, salty or sour.

5.

Hear
A. Students will listen to different animal sounds and determine the sounds of each animal.
B. Students will draw a picture of the animal they think goes with each sound on their iPad.
C. Students will draw a diagram of all the different animals they discovered.

Homework:
Sight- Students can go home and take pictures of what they see, describe the different colors, shapes,
etc
Touch- Students will go online and take a quiz on what they feel.
Hear- Students will make a sound on their iPad and play a game with their parents to guess the sound.
Smell- Students will describe what types of smell they discover at home and make diagram on their
smart notebook.
Taste- Students will taste different foods at home and draw on their iPad, what they taste.

End of Unit Project
Students will watch a video on the 5 senses and finalize what they learned about each of the senses, by
drawing a diagram to match the different senses together.
