Rhetorical Situation
The rhetorical situation of this paper is to create a compelling discussion about the ad I chose and how it
appeals to viewers. I chose to do this by, discussing why the producer of the ad chose to do what they did
with the ad, as well as how they were able to appeal to different audiences. I described the ad in detail, in
order to give a mental image of what is going on in the ad and how they incorporated ethos, pathos, and
logos into the ad.
Focus Areas
While reading my document, I would like you to focus on my word choice. I want to learn how to use
more descriptive words, and I guess learn how to make my documents sound more professional. I think
that if I know how to use more complex words, it could be really helpful in the future if I have to write
something more professional and for a job. There are a lot of people that try to use big words, without
knowing the true meaning and so they end up not really making sense in context. By using more
descriptive words, and know how to use different words, I think I could really expand my vocabulary.

SLO C
Throughout the writing process we used many of the things that SLO C entails. The planning,
researching, pre-writing part of composing this document were all a part of writing LSA 1. We did all of
our research on the ad, and the source that it came from because you have to make sure that youre using
an ad that appeals to logos which is the ethos part of the ad. You want to make sure that youre using a
reliable source, otherwise youre ad wont be as genuine and appealing. The revising, editing,
proofreading, collaborating, and incorporating feedback part of composing this ad was done when we
would work in groups for peer review. Peer reviews were an important part of the writing process because

we are able to get feedback on exactly what we need to fix before the document is due, from multiple
people.
SLO G
We used SLO G since the beginning as well because when we first began writing LSA 1 we were asked
to pick an ad that related to our major. Our majors are something that we are interested in and would like
to pursue as a career. We were able to look at various ads, both video and print ads. We had a lot of
freedom, as far as personal beliefs go especially because they related to our majors.

The World Without Nurses: A Rhetorical Analysis of an ad by The California Nurses Association

The ad by the California Nurses Association is an ad about the type of things that nurses
go through on a daily basis. They show the viewer what the healthcare system would like
without nurses, in a very interesting way. They do this by, first showing various situations with
nurses, and then those same situations without nurses. With this ad, they are able to create an
informative and emotion provoking ad by using ethos, pathos, and logos.
This is an ad that was published by The California Nurses Association. This ad shows a

few different situations with the nurses providing care for their patients, and then by showing the
same situation without the nurses. The ad has a lot of great examples of pathos for example, in
one scenario, a nurse is shown helping a patient walk down the hallway, and shortly after the

nurse is faded away as if they did not exist, then the ad shows the patient looking around for his
nurse. In another scenario the ad shows a nurse giving a child a shot and then they do the same
thing by fading the nurse out, and they then zoom in on the child to show tears running down his
face in, in order to provoke emotion from the viewer. They do a very good job of provoking
emotion, with both the different scenarios and the tone of the narrators voice.
This ad shows how nursing is often a profession that people just look over because in the
health care system you see the doctors as the most important people, when in reality each
different profession that is apart of the healthcare system is equally important. Nurses often have
more of an interaction with the patients, especially in a hospital setting. Nurses are there to
provide treatment and comfort for their patients, as well as to keep them safe.

which should go with your later discussion.

Comment [10]: A part

The ad itself shows ethos, as well as pathos and logos. The pathos of this ad would be the
scenarios with the patients. It draws from different angles by using different patients, especially
children. One scene that really provokes emotion is when there is an older gentleman and the
nurse is helping him walk down the hallway and then she disappears and hes left there looking
around for her. He looks so confused and lost, and as a viewer that really makes you feel for the
patient. I feel as though nurses really do have a more emotional connection with their patients as
well, they have to be emotionally invested but not too emotionally invested, which is kind of
what this ad shows.
The logos of this ad would be the part of the ad where they say how the healthcare system
would be affected if we didnt have nurses. It visually shows you how it would be affected as
well. Nurses are a very important part of the health care system, theyre literally the middleman
in between the patient and the doctor. Generally we tend to take nurses and the work they do for

granted. They in the end have a lot of interaction with the patients, and often times we may get
frustrated, but what we dont realize is that the things that theyre doing are what the doctors ask
them to do. Over the summer when I shadowed a pediatric nurse, she said that sometimes she
didnt agree with the doctors calls. As a society I think we have to keep that in mind. The nurses
and the doctors do everything that they can in order to provide the best care that they possibly
can, but ultimately when the patient leaves the hospital it is up to them to continue doing what is
best for their health.
The ethos of this ad was the language. The narrator speaks very professional and formal,
and thats important, especially when youre being taken care of. Youre going to want someone
that speaks properly because theyre going to come off as knowing what theyre doing. The ad
was also made by the California Nurses Association, which is a part of National Nurses United

which as stated on their website is, the largest union and professional association of registered
nurses in United States History. Being that the ad comes from such a genuine source, makes it
more reliable and people are more likely to trust it because of the level of integrity they possess.
This ad shows so many great examples of ethos, pathos, and logos. All three are an
important part of creating a great ad that appeals to all different types of audiences. As well as
showing how important nurses are, as well as how much they do in order to help their patients.
Without nurses there would be a huge gap in our healthcare system, and with out them we would
