How will we assess learning?

We will use two rubrics while we are observing the students and their work; a content rubric and a information
literacy rubric. Both of these rubrics focus on the students ability to find, organize, and present information in a
wide variety of sources. The content rubric will also assess students abilities to work with others in an
appropriate manner

Library Resources: Famous Nebraskans Project

Students were given a list of these resources, but also had the choice to search for additional resources on the
Internet.
Reading for information, pleasure, and lifelong learning: During class time, the students used these resources to
get information for the slide. Most of these students kept their resources after the project was done because
they gained a great deal of interest in the Nebraskan they had chosen. There were students who told me facts
about certain Nebraskans that I didnt know.
Professional Tools Used to Select the Materials: I found books in our library by searching Nebraska, or just
searching the names students had chosen on our online library catalog.
Group Instruction: I showed the class the list of famous Nebraskans they could choose from. I showed them
where they could find good information about them in the library. The class only has 15 students, so I was able
to help them out if it was needed.
Support cultural, social, and linguistic needs of the individual learners: Being able to use the reading scores of
the 4th graders, I searched for books and websites that offered a wide variety of reading levels. No students had
visual or hearing issues, so that made it much easier for me to find good resources for them as a class.

Reflection on Planning, Teaching and Assessment

Planning:
I talked to Julia and Deanna about collaborating on a Famous Nebraskans project because I felt like this would be
a good way for the 4th graders to really utilize the library resources. Most of the resources we have are not brand
new, but contain very good information on the Nebraskans that were chosen for this project. I had an idea of
making a class PowerPoint, by having students pick one famous Nebraskan and work with each other to find five
sources of information on that person. It didnt take very long to plan the unit and create a scoring rubric
because Julia had done something fairly similar the past year with just books in her classroom. Julia created a
note-taking chart, and Deanna and I took care of finding the library resources for the students to use.
Teaching:
I think that the teaching went really well for this unit. Julia had the students come up with a list of Nebraskans
they could find information about. Most of the students didnt know who some of the famous Nebraskans were,
or that they were even from Nebraska. We paired the students up to look for information together even though
they are looking for different people. We thought this was a good way to work on teamwork and helping each
other out. Once the students found their resources, Julia told them that they would be creating a slide for a class
PowerPoint that will be presented to the class once the project is completed.
Assessment:
The students did work in pairs to find information, but we assessed them individually. We used the attached
content rubric to assess them on their capability of finding information and to complete and present their one
PowerPoint slide to the entire class. Each PowerPoint slide had to have a title, a picture of the Nebraskan, and at
least four interesting facts about that Nebraskan. We also used the Multiple Literacies Standards checklist while
observing the students working on finding their resources and working on their slide. Of the 15 students in the
fourth grade class, all of them scored at least Substandard on every task. I was very happy with the additional
resources the students found because they were from reliable sources and not a Wikipedia type website. This
was the first PowerPoint that the students have ever made, so they werent anything fancy but they mainly had
all of the information and requirements that were asked of.
