‘Koss Clin MON [wed = 1,32 COURSE SYLLABUS: ARS 102 Three-Dimensional Design FALL Semester 2007 Course Instructor: James Alexander, 934-8568 [office], 933-1333 [home], alexari@uab.edu Office Hours: Tuesday and Thursday, 11:00 to 12:00 or by appointment Office located at Warehouse Bldg. at corner of Second Ave. South & 14" St COURSE SUMMARY: Three-dimensional Design is one of four foundation level courses offered in studio art and serves as a pre-requisite course for all beginning levels of Sculpture [ARS 220] and Ceramic Sculpture [ARS 230]. The information provided and the projects explored in this course are intended to provide every student with a basic understanding of and appreciation for all forms of three-dimensional art, while preparing art majors for upper level instruction. The course is fast paced and will cover a broad spectrum of conceptual thinking, aesthetic consideration, material application, and methods of construction. Critiques: The primary method for judging the quality of work created by students in an Art Studio course is the class or individual critique. Each student will be expected to verbally present and defend their work and be prepared to clarify any questions. There will be approximately ten critiques during the length of the semester and attendance is mandatory. if'a student presents a finished project for critique that fails to address the issues of the project or in any other manner is perceived by the student as below their standards, the student may repeat the project and resubmit it for consideration. Only the best effort by each student of each project will be considered in the grading process. If a student fails to present a project on time for the critique, this option is unavailable and they will receive a zero for that project} The final critique will occur during the final exam period as published by the University. (Pr Absences: ‘There are no excused absences except for medical or personal emergencies Each student is responsible for the information disseminated during the class period. If you ‘must miss a class, please try to leave a message at either of the telephone numbers listed above, Please confer with a classmate or the instructor about all missed information prior to the next class meeting, Leaving class early without permission or habitually arriving late for class [anything over 15 minutes] is considered an absence. Grades: A student’s grade will be determined by the quality of the work presented for critique, attendance, and classroom participation. Because any project may be updated at any time prior to the last class meeting, it will be difficult to advise a student of their grade standing during the course of the term, however the instructor will be pleased to meet with any student at any time to discuss their progress in the course. Time spent on a project is a quantitative evaluation and not a qualitative judgment of the work presented for critical review. Spending time developing a project may facilitate its successful resolution, but does not guarantee it. Power Equipment: During the course of the term, instruction will be given on the proper and safe use of the power equipment in this studio. Until that time, no students, regardless of their prior experience, may use this equipment for any reason. Once instruction as been received, each student will be individually monitored for the proper use of the equipment for their own safety and the extended life span of the equipment. No power tool surface is a worktable. ‘When a student is finished using a power tool they must leave it clean and ready for operation
