(Social Studies) 3-4.1: Compare the economic conditions for various classes of people in South Carolina, including
the elite, the middle class, the lower class, the independent farmers, and the enslaved and free African Americans
(Science) 3.L.5A.2: Develop and use a food chain model to classify organisms as producers, consumers, and
decomposers and to describe how organisms obtain energy.
(Reading) RI.3.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text
as the basis for the answers. RI.3.4: Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and
phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area. RI.3.5: Use text features and search tools (e.g., key
words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently. RI.3.7: Use information
gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text
Activating Strategy: The teacher will review what the students have learned thus far about Harriet Tubman.
Teaching Strategy:
1. The teacher will review with the students about underline key information and when answering questions
looking for the answer in the text and numbering where they found the answer.
2. The teacher will read to the students and underline key information on the economic classes before the civil
war.
3. The students will hand answer the questions on their own and turn in the worksheet.
