Chapter 1
Sentence

1.1 Definition about Sentence

The sentence is group of words that expresses a complete idea and that includes a
subject and a verb. And sentence always tells who or what and what is or what
happens

1.2 Characteristic of Sentence

1. All sentences begin with a capital letter: A, B, C,.
(The other kind of letters are called lower case: a, b, c,. )
2. All sentences end with a period or an exclamation point or a question mark:( . ! ? )
3. A sentence contains at least one clause.
That is, a sentence contains at least one subject and at least one predicate.
4. All sentences follow a standard word order. These are correct sentences:
The dog bit the man.
The man bit the dog.

Chapter 2
Simple Sentence
2.1 Definition of Simple Sentence

A simple sentence is a sentence with one independent clause, expresses one idea
and have 1 subject and 1 predicate.

2.2 Example of Simple Sentence

1. The train was late.
"The train" = subject, "was" = verb
2. Mary and Samantha took the bus.
"Mary and Samantha" = compound subject, "took" = verb
3. I looked for Mary and Samantha at the bus station.
"I" = subject, "looked" = verb
4. Mary and Samantha arrived at the bus station before noon and left on the

bus

before I arrived.
"Mary and Samantha" = compound subject, "arrived" and "left" = compound verb
5. Joe waited for the train.
"Joe" = subject, "waited" = verb

2.3 Pattern of Simple Sentence with example

Subject + Verb
The boy ran.
The subject and the verb can also have description (modifiers) in this pattern, and
there can be many subjects doing one verb or one subject doing many verbs. In
both cases, it still follows the basic Subject + Verb pattern.
The young boy ran quickly.
The young boy and girl ran quickly.
The young boy ran and played.
We can also add a prepositional phrase to the end.

The young boy ran quickly to the park.

Its important to remember that to have a simple sentence, all the subjects need to
come before all the verbs.
The girls, the boys, and their parents all danced, sang, and played.

Subject + Verb + Direct Object

The girl threw the ball.
Again, there can be modifiers and more than one subject doing more than one
verb together. (This will be important when we look at more complex sentence
patterns.)
The young girl and the boy threw the red ball back and forth.

Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object

The young girl threw the boy the ball.
The direct object of the verb answers the question What? In other words, What
did the young girl throw? The answer is the ball, so its the direct object.
The indirect object of the verb answers the question to whom/what? In other
words, To whom did the young girl throw? The answer is to the boy, so the
boy is the indirect object.
You can also put the indirect object after the direct object: Subject + Verb +
Direct Object + to + Indirect Object
The young girl threw the ball to the boy.
There is/are/was/were + Subject (+prepositional phrase)
There are two children in the park.
This type of simple sentences shows that something exists (or is present) in a
certain location.

Subject + Linking Verb + Complement

The two children became tired.
Linking verbs are verbs like be, seem, and become. They are followed by
complements, not by direct objects.
The verb be can be followed by

a noun
One of the children is a girl.

an adjective
The children are tired.

a prepositional phrase
The children are in the park.

Other linking verbs like seem and become are usually followed by adjectives.
The children seem tired.

2.4 Formula of Simple Sentence

1 IC (independent clause)
