READ 3226 Lesson Reflection

How did the you actually taught to your students vary from
this lesson plan you submitted for grading?
The lesson plan I actually taught was a mini-lesson that the
teacher had me do based on her weekly lesson plan. When I taught my
mini-lesson, my cooperating teacher designed the independent
activity. The activity was for them to do a jot, but only to identify a
common theme between two books they have read. I also changed the
guided practice. In the classroom my guided practice was all done in
one step, instead of breaking each part up and talking about it. I had to
do this because of time.
What evidence do you have that students mastered or did not
master the lesson objective? Based on your evaluation of their
work, how many students mastered the lesson objective.
The day I taught my lesson there was not enough time to do the
assessment I had planned to use for evaluation. Instead, I collected the
jots from students that they did during independent activity. I went
through them and 17 out of 21 students were able to identify a
common theme between two different books. Although, these results
were good they do not show that the students reached the entire
objective. The students did not get a chance to show whether they can
compare and contrast two settings. Because of the lack of assessment
I have to reply on student response during guided practice for my other
evidence of objective mastery. Holding that information into account, I
would say that the same 17 out of 21 mastered the objective.

Name at least 1 aspect of the lesson that was successful. What

caused it to be successful? How did you contribute to this
success?
One successful aspect of my lesson was the teacher input.
During teacher input I held the classes attention and was able to
elaborate on my models for deeper understanding. My biggest
contribution to this being successful was the compare and contrast
paragraph because it wrapped all the ideas up and showed the
students the purpose of the lesson.
Name at least 1 aspect of lesson that was less successful.
What caused it to be less successful? How did you contribute
to this?
The least successful aspect of my lesson was the independent
activity. The independent was not successful because it did not fully
assess the lesson objective. I tried as best I could to contribute to the
bettering of this aspect by asking more questions during closure and
remembering what students had said during guided practice. I also
worked my way around the room a little bit while students were
working independently.
What changes might make this lesson more successful? Why
might these changes help improve the lesson?
To make this lesson more successful I would change the
independent activity to something where each student is using the
same two texts. When the independent activity has students choose
any book they want it is hard for the teacher to know if any part of
their assessment is correct. Students could understand the content of
their book very well, but if the teacher knows nothing about the book

she cannot grade an assessment based on accuracy. It would have to

be based on completion. By having the students each use the same
two texts the teacher would be able to assess the lesson thoroughly for
lesson objective mastery.
