MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ‘Semester Subject : Dynamics of Machines Max. Marks Subject Code MESO2 Duration Instructions to the Candidates: Answer one full question from each unit. 4, 5. a) b) a) ing data, if any, may be suitably assumed. UNIT -1 For a four bar mechanism ABCD, Link lengths are, AB=60mm, BC=80mm, CD=70mm and AD=120mm. Link AD is fixed and AB makes 60° with AD. A force of 900N, acts on CD at a point ‘S',30mm from end C and making 70° with CD, the angle measured in C.W direction with CS. Using force Polygon method and neglecting friction, determine the force on each link and torque on link AB for static equilibrium. For a slider crank mechanism, crank length=500mm, connecting rod length=1000mm and crank makes 45° with the line of stroke. A force of SOON acts on the piston. Using force polygon method and neglecting friction, determine the force on each link and torque on crank for static equilibrium. UNIT ~ Ir The T.M exerted by a steam engine is represented by T=8000+1000Sin20- 2000 Cos2e Nm, the cycle repeats every 180° and ‘0’ is the crank angle. The mass of Flywheel is 500kg,radius of gyration 750mm and the engine speed 300RPM.Assuming external resistance as constant, determine i)The power developed Ii) Coefficient of speed fluctuation ili) Angular acceleration for crank angle of45°, Derive an expression for stress induced in the Rim of the Flywheel. The Turning-Moment diagram for a multi cylinder engine has been drawn to a scale of Imm?=50 N-m and the intercepted areas with the mean torque line taken in order are -30, +410, -280, +320, -330, +250, -360, +280, -260 mm’, Mean speed of fly wheel is 800 RPM, fluctuation of speed 2% of mean speed, safe Hoop stress=7MPa and density of fly wheel material 7200kg/m°. Determine the diameter and the cross sectional dimensions of the Rim, if width of the rim is five times the thickness. UNIT - 111 Derive an expression for ratio of belt tensions for a V- belt system. v 100 3Hrs (20) (20) (20) (06) (14) (08) Page 1 of 2 10 >) a) b) a) b) a) ») >) ‘An open belt drive is required to transmit 7.5 KW from a pulley 1.2 m in diameter, running at 250 rpm. The angle of contact is 165° and the coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.3. if the safe working stress for the belt material is 1.5 MPa, density 1 kg/m? and thickness of belt 10mm, determine the width of the belt taking centrifugal tension into account. Four masses of magnitude 5,6,7 and M kg revolve in planes A,B,C and D respectively. The planes are spaced A to B 0.8m, A to C 1.2m and A to D 2m. The masses are all at the same radius. Find the magnitude of ‘M’ and the relative angular position of the masses for the complete balance. UNIT - IV For a slider crank mechanism, derive an expression for resultant unbalanced primary force, using partial balancing method. Explain ‘Direct and reverse crank’ method of balancing a multi cylinder radial engine with an example. Neglecting friction, derive the relation between speed and height, for a porter governor. A porter governor consists of four arms, each 0.3m long hinged along the axis. Arms at the top position are inclined at 40° to the spindle axis. Weight of each governor ball 25N and central load is 250N. Determine the radii of rotation at minimum and maximum speed if total lift is 60mm, UNIT - Vv Derive an expression for gyroscopic couple, for a rotating disk having precessional motion. The rotor of a ship has a mass of 1000kg, radius of gyration 300mm and makes 1500 RPM clockwise looking from the Bow end, Determine Gyroscopic couple and state its effect, when the ship is steering to the left at a speed of 40 kmph around a circular path of 200m radius. Derive the expressions for displacement, velocity and acceleration of the follower, for a tangent cam with roller follower, when the roller is in contact with straight flank. Also explain maximum and minimum, velocity and acceleration, when the roller is in contact with the straight flank. Derive the expressions for displacement, velocity and acceleration of the follower, for a circular arc cam with flat faced follower, when the flat face of follower is in contact with circular flank. Also explain maximum and minimum, velocity and acceleration, when the follower is in contact with the convex flank. WMESO2 (12) (20) (20) (20) (19) (10) (08) 2) (10) (10) Page 2of2
