Description and Background

Information

S.L. 2 Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text

read aloud or information presented in diverse media and
formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.
The lesson was designed to give my students an in depth review of the main idea and
supporting details which they have been studying for a while. The lesson will begin with
me showing the class a Flocabulary rap on the main idea. Afterwards I will have them give
me their own definitions of the main idea and supporting details and I will write their
answers on the board This will serve as the hook and grab their attention. In this lesson the
students will be reading the book Corduroy https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=n0mvu9Sv9Xs and they will have to be able to distinguish what the main idea and
supporting details of the story are. After the story the students will complete the guided
practice activity which will ask them to quietly write down what they main idea and
supporting details of the story were. After the guided practice is completed the students
will be asked to complete the independent practice which will ask them read a passage and
write down what the main idea and supporting details are we will then review their answers.
The lesson will end by the students completing a ticket out the door activity which will
ask them to write down what they learned today. Afterwards they will be given their
homework assignment.
95% of students will be able to identify the main idea and support their answer with details.

Lesson Objectives

Varying Objectives for

Individuals Needs

I will provide easy to understand explanations for those who are auditory learners and
hands on activities for those students who are hands on learners. Additionally for those
students who are advanced I will provide them with an online activity (www.brainpop.com).
For my ELL students I would provide them with a class buddy that can help assist them
with some components of the lesson that they do not understand.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this lesson is to teach students about the importance and significance of
being able to identify the main idea and being able to support their answer with details. It is
important for students to learn about main idea because it helps students remember and
identify important information or the main points presented to them in a text.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

Pre-assessment

Teacher Modeling or
Demonstration
Guided Practice
Checking for
Understanding

How will I find out what students already know about this topic?
Ask the students to provide their own definition of what they think the main idea is. When is it
important to know the main idea?
I will express teacher modeling demonstration by using an online audio book to assist me in
teaching the lesson. I will also demonstrate the main idea by using the Flocabulary video to
teach the lesson.
After listening to the book Corduroy the students will complete the guided practice activity
which will ask them to quietly write down on their worksheet what they main idea and
supporting details of the story were.
Students will be asked questions about the main idea to make sure that they have a clear
understanding about what is being taught.
What is the main idea?
What are supporting details?
The students will be asked to complete the independent practice worksheet which will ask
them read a passage and write down what the main idea and supporting details are.

Ticket out of the door activity. Ask the students to write a couple sentences on their ticket
about what they learned in class.
The students will get into groups and they will have to answer the questions about the main
idea on the task card that they are given. ( Located(attached) on the last page of the lesson

Tell the students to complete the homework assignment worksheet on the main idea and
return it to class on tomorrow so that we can review it. I will also tell them to go home or to a
local library and find a book that interests them. I will tell them to find the main idea and
supporting details of the book and share it with the class on the next day.

The Smart Board will display the Flocabulary rap and the audio book. Room recess.com

PART III: REFLECTION

Strengths

Weaknesses
Suggestions for
Improvement

Describe the strengths of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management.
Describe the strengths of student engagement. The strengths in the lesson was that instead of lecturing
the students I used an online interactive video and I really did not have any behavior problems so the
class was easy to manage. The students seem engaged for the video but during the guided and
independent practice the did not seem as engaged in the lesson
Describe the weaknesses of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management.
Describe the weaknesses of student engagement. I should have been a little bit more energetic to help
the students be more excited and engaged in the lesson. For my closure activity ticket out the door I
could have given the students an actual ticket instead of an index card.
What would you change when teaching this lesson again?
For my closure activity ticket out the door I will give the students an actual ticket. I will also be
more energetic next time.
