Reflection:
Short term side effects of low fat or fat free diets are a little bit of weight loss. Long term side
effects are no change at all. Low fat diets are intended to decrease the amount of fat for the
body to store.
Right now, my weight loss goals are to lose about 30 pounds. I would like to get back to my prehysterectomy weight. I have never had to diet or exercise before now and I have just been
hoping my body would even out and my metabolism would go back to what it was before the
surgery. But I know that is not going to happen, so my plan is to eat a sensible diet, counting
calories, and exercise. Planning out a menu to meet the daily allowances for my body is what I
plan on doing. Eating a well-rounded diet, not depriving myself of things, but watching how
much I do eat and making sure I am eating all the nutrients my body needs is the best diet. I
have talked to several doctors or nutritionists who have said that the best way to takeoff weight
is slow and steady through diet and exercise. Using a crash diet helps the weight come off, but
does not keep it off. Slow and steady helps the body adjust to its new nutrient intake and it does
not go into starvation mode, ready to store anything taken consumed.
The diet I have seen ruin more people is the fen-phen diet. I watched what it did to my mother.
Everything seemed great to begin, but after a while on the diet, her body started to compensate
for the weight loss and she started gaining the weight back. Then she would have to take more,
its a bad cycle. I also saw this happen to several other people because I was working as a
pharmacy technician when the fen-phen craze was happening. The diet would speed up the
metabolism while taking the pills, but then it would slow down when off the pills.
