6-8.3.6 Describe the adolescent need for peer acceptance and how it may
affect some students ability to show kindness and respect for others.

Lesson will use interpersonal, intrapersonal, visual, and verbal intelligences. Lesson
will include a power-point presentation, verbal instruction, classroom interaction,
classroom discussion, and group discussion.

Students will gain knowledge of various stereotypes in their school and on college
campuses as well as the importance of diversity at college. Students will gain
knowledge on the importance of identifying diversity during the college search process.

40-45 minutes
Classroom with computer and smart-board, PowerPoint presentation, lesson
handout, writing utensils, large sheets of paper (flip chart, poster board, etc.)
Pre-Test, Who knows what they want to do after high school discussion, present postsecondary options, group discussion on benefits of each post-secondary option,
questions and prizes based on lesson, post-test

1. Opening and Pre-Test (5 minutes)


PROCEDURE

a. Counselors will explain to students that we will be discussing colleges


and stereotypes during this lesson. Counselors will pass out the pretest for students to complete.
2. What are some things students usually consider when choosing a college? (5
minutes)
a. Counselors will facilitate a discussion on different aspects that are
important to students when choosing a college. Focus on academics,
sports, greek life, campus size, location, networking opportunities and
diversity.
3. Why is diversity important in schools? (5 minutes)
a. Ask students, What sort of people would you expect to meet on a
college campus. Counselors will bring up the following article
(http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/professorsguide/2009/08/12/why-does-diversity-matter-at-college-anyway) to
discuss the importance of diversity at college
b. Ask students, What sort of students would you expect to meet on
campus
4. Stereotype activity (20)
a. Using the large sheets of paper or flip chart, ask students to name off
4 or 5 groups they see in school now (e.g. jocks, brains) and have
them write a groups name on a single sheet.
i. Have students go to each sheet to write down adjectives
related to each sheet related to the heading. Students should
only write new descriptions
b. Once everyone is finished, have students take a moment and look at
the adjectives they wrote. Use the following questions to lead a
discussion

Do assumptions apply to everyone in a group?

Do most people hold the same assumptions about a group?


Why or why not?

Do assumptions tell us anything about an individual in a


category?

How do your assumptions affect your behavior towards


others?

students from fully taking advantage of the diversity on campus and

5. Post-Test (5 minutes)
a. Counselors will pass out post-test for students to complete and answer
any questions students may have.
