I am able to demonstrate basic helping
skills such as active listening, facilitating
reflection and understanding nonverbal
communication. Also, I am aware of
advocacy efforts and know where to locate
accurate and helpful mental health info.
With experience gained in my current
position, I can align program and
department goals with institutional
outcomes. Also, I am able to collect data
for assessment, evaluation, and research in
an effort to make informed decisions.
I am aware and respectful of differences in
others, and participate in opportunities that
allow me to engage with others different
from myself. I also participate in activities
to gain cultural and global knowledge
such as attending professional
conferences.
The ACPA Statement of Ethical Principles
and Standards outlines the ethical
principles of the profession. I contribute to
the development of the profession by
recruiting students to the profession and
serving professional organizations.
Our profession was built upon serving
students in their development as young
adults. Professional organizations help
remind us of where we came from and
lead the way for the future.
I have participated on various search
committees for our department and have
also created and maintained collaborations
with other offices and departments in
order to achieve our department goals.
Through the law class, I have been able to
understand how the constitution applies to
public institutions but not necessarily
private ones. Also, I know that WMU is
run by shared governance between the
administration and faculty.
In my position, I have helped in
developing the mission and vision of our
department. Additionally, I have an

adaptive leadership style and understand
how it can be difficult to work with.
I understand my primary work
responsibilities and can assess my own
strengths and weaknesses. Developing
cultural skills and creating a healthy work
life balance are also important to me.
There are psychosocial, cognitive, and
identity theories that help explain student
development but it is important to
recognize that they are limiting since they
do not apply to all students. The original
theories were created for white, cisgender,
heterosexual men and thus we must take
caution in applying theory to students.

I noticed that I ranked myself much higher in the original competencies assessment at the
beginning of my graduate program than where I actually was at the time. This time around I was
much more critical and I have ranked myself as having extensive competence in all of the
competency areas with the exception of the assessment, evaluation, and research and law, policy,
and governance competency areas. The areas in which I have become very competent are due to
direct experience in my field experience. All of the competency areas were covered through the
coursework but it was the hands on experience that really helped me develop my knowledge,
skills, and abilities. My two areas for improvement are ones that I have less experience with
since I do not have as much practice with them in my graduate assistantship. I have not had
direct experience with either qualitative or quantitative studies. Additionally, I do not regularly
have to think much about law, policy, and governance in my graduate assistantship. I want to
work in leadership development or student activities and I think my strengths in understanding
teamwork, supervision, and social justice will be great assets. The professional competencies are
a great tool for understanding individual strengths and areas for improvement, which should be
used for reflection on a regular basis.
