DISTRICT
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has 202 schools in the school system.
There are 132 elementary schools, 38 middle schools, 25 high schools, 1 career and technology
center, 5 special schools, and 1 charter school (MCPS, 2014). There are 22,236 employees in the
county (MCPS, 2014). 151,289 students are enrolled in the county (MCPS, 2014). The student
demographics are 32% White, 27.4% Hispanic, 21.4% Black or African American, 14.4% Asian,
<5% American Indian or Alaskan Native, and <5% Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.
About 35% of the student population receives free and reduced meals (FARMS), 13.3% are
English Speakers for Other Languages (ESOL), and 11.7% of students receive special education
services (MCPS, 2014).
The county has many technologies available in the schools. Those technologies include
Promethean Boards, ELMO document cameras, mobile carts with netbooks, microphones,
projectors, and laptops. Schools also have computer labs with a class set of computers for the
students to use. The county has access to a variety of software that can enhance instruction for
the students.
PROBLEM
The overall problem is that teachers are unsure of how to use technology to enhance
instruction in reading, math, and writing. The county does not have required trainings for staff
on ways to use technology to support learning. Teachers will not be able to grow professionally
if they do not do anything to improve their instruction.
NEEDS ASSESSMENT
The overall need for the district is for staff technology training to demonstrate how to use
technology to enhance learning in specific content areas. A staff survey was conducted to
determine if staff would be interested in technology training and what subject areas specifically
they would like support in. The results of the survey are listed below in Table 1. Based on the
results of the survey, teachers were unsure of how to use technology to enhance instruction in all
content areas. Also, teachers identified that they needed more support in implementing
technology in Reading, Writing, and Math instruction. When asked about Science and Social
Studies, the scores were not as high as the other subject areas.
The county has all of these technology resources; however, they are unsure how to use it
to enhance instruction. There are many quality teachers in the county that would benefit from
specific technology trainings. Strategies and tips on how to incorporate technology software in
each content area will be addressed. In order to meet the needs of the teachers and students, staff
technology trainings should be implemented. By doing this, the district will improve knowledge
of effective technology use for instruction.

AUDIENCE
The audience for this technology training plan is teachers. The teachers are anyone who
instructs students Pre-Kindergarten through grade 12. It could include classroom teachers,
ESOL teachers, academic support teachers, and specialists. There are 11,836 teachers in the
county. 84.7 percent of the teachers have a masters degree or equivalent (MCPS, 2014). The
amount of time these teachers have been in the district range from beginning teachers to veteran
teachers. These teachers have a variety of background of technology. Some teachers may have
more knowledge of instructional technology and could share their knowledge in the trainings
with others to learn from as well. It is important to have a variety of background knowledge in
the trainings because all learners will have something to contribute to the discussions. They may
be able to teach someone else something. According to the survey that was conducted, teachers
were very interested in attending technology trainings to enhance their instruction in specific
content areas.
GOALS/OBJECTIVES
The overall goals of this district technology training plan will be to enrich the staffs
knowledge of how to incorporate technology into specific content areas effectively. The
trainings will provide staff members with the opportunity to explore new strategies and
techniques that will best support their students learning. As a result of this training, teachers will
be able to create and implement the strategies they learned throughout the training.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
There are many instructional strategies that would be used throughout the technology
trainings. The county has access to the ActivInspire software so the plan is to use that to present
the information during trainings. During the training, different games or activities that could be
implemented could be implemented for the group of students. This instructional strategy would
help teachers understand the strategy because they would be learning from their experiences.

FIELD TEST
The field test will be conducted at a few schools throughout the county. Teachers will
attend the technology training workshops that are appropriate for their instruction. After they
have completed the workshops, their instruction will be monitored to determine if they
understand the goal of the trainings. Teachers will be asked to complete a survey identifying
what was successful and what could be changed for future workshops. The teachers will also be
asked if there were any questions that have yet to be answered about the content they learned
from the workshops. All of this information would help to determine the successful activities
and revisions for the workshop.
REVISION
The workshop will be revised based on the information observed from the field test and
the results of the teachers surveys. The results from the survey will be taken into consideration
as revisions are being made. The teachers will be able to provide information on what they
enjoyed about the workshop and what they think should be changed. All of the revisions and
questions will be corrected and answered before the workshops will be taught to the entire
district.
EVALUATIONS
Teachers will be asked to complete a 3-2-1 evaluation at the end of the workshop to
determine the success of the workshops. The survey will contain the following questions:

1 additional comment you have about workshop
By having teachers complete this evaluation, it will help instructors gather information to revise
the instruction for future trainings. It will also give instructors an idea of what information still
needs to be discussed in the future trainings.
SUMMATIVE EVALUATION
The summative evaluation will be conducted through an online survey where all teachers
will be asked to answer questions about the overall training experience. The questions may
range from the overall experience to more specific questions about the content, instructor, new
information that was learned, and what strategies they are implementing in their instruction. It
will also ask what training they attend, so the evaluations can be more specific to the training.
This survey will be emailed to all teachers and posted on the staff county website for staff
members to complete.
BUDGET
The following information is an overview of the budget for the district technology
training plan. The training instructor and teachers will be given a stipend for completing the
workshop. There is no cost for the training facility because trainings will be held at district
training centers. There will also be no cost for handouts as those will be provided on the county
training website for teachers to access after the workshop.

FOLLOW-UP
The plan to follow-up with the success of the training would be to allow teachers time to
implement what they have learned in the workshops into their instruction. The county offers an
opportunity where teachers can share resources they have created on the online curriculum. By
using this information, teachers will be able to demonstrate their knowledge from the trainings.
It also provides an opportunity for the teachers to share information, use it or modify it to best fit
their students. When teachers have an opportunity to share ideas, it helps them to improve their
own teaching strategies and their knowledge. A review of the information that is being uploaded
would determine if teachers did understand and implement learning appropriately. Based on this
information, new trainings can be developed to continue the learning of instructional technology
for teachers.
