TWS 6: Analysis of Student Learning

Data on Whole Class

The tables below shows the data I collected before, during, and after my Showcase
Lesson. My objective for this lesson was for the students to be able to predict five
different sounds when I shook the different jars by using their sense of hearing. I
had five different mason jars that were covered with black construction paper and I
had a different item in each Mason jar. I explained the worksheet to the students
before we even started the activity. I also wrote the words for them to put in each
blank on the board. This helped the students when they were writing in their
guesses on the worksheet. I explained each word as I wrote it on the board and I
also pointed out how each word had a different beginning sound. This helped the
students when they were trying to figure out the sound of each item in the jar.

Key for Tables:

X means they
completed the work or
raised their hand to
answer questions.
The students that are in
bold and highlighted in
yellow are my below
average, average, and
above average
students.
Number 8 is my below
average student,
Number 9 is my above
average student, and
Number 15 is my
average student.

To summarize, my data showed that my students

had an understanding of the concept of how to
use their sense of hearing to be able to tell what was in each jar. They also
understood that we had to be really quiet while we were doing this activity so that
they could figure out what was in each jar. The students also learned what a
hypothesis was and that it was a guess and that it was ok if they guessed wrong.

Results on Three Individual Students:

When I examined the data for my high-achieving student, the pre-assessment
showed that the student was able to answer the questions I asked from the story I
read. During the lesson, the student understood what each word was that I wrote on
the board. He also understood how the worksheet was supposed to be filled out. On
the post-assessment he drew the results of each jar instead of just writing the word.
When I examined the data for my average-level student, the pre-assessment
showed that the student could answer questions when asked from the story I read.
The student could also tell me other things that she can hear besides what was in
the story. During the lesson, the student participated with the activity and
completed her worksheet. She asked questions when she was unsure but for the
most part she understood what to do. The post-assessment showed that the student
didnt have to correct any answers because she got them all right.
When I examined the data for my low-achieving student, the pre-assessment
showed that the student could answer questions that were asked from the story.
During the assessment, the student participated with the activity and completed
the worksheet with help from the assistant teacher. She had to sit by him to make

sure he was staying focused on the lesson and activity. The post-assessment
showed that the student didnt understand that if he guessed the wrong item for the
jar that he had to write the correct item. He guessed right on all the jars he just
needed help writing the words in the blank.

It is important to understand the learning of these particular students because

teachers need to know the different levels of the students to be able to teach them.
They should also be able to realize and understand what those students can and
cant do. As teachers we want our students to learn their full potential and be able
to do the best they can.

*** Attached, you will find examples of these students pre, during, and
post assessments. The above average students work is first. The average
students work is second. The below average students work is last.
